State Reports Toxic Shock Cases
Four cases of toxic shock syndrome reported in Idaho this year have prompted a warning from the state Department of Health and Welfare.
In two of the cases, the illness was caused by misuse of tampons. All four of the women stricken have recovered. To avoid toxic shock, women are advised to:
Change tampons frequently - every four to eight hours. Overnight use for up to eight hours is OK.
Avoid using tampons that are more absorbent than needed.
Alternate tampons with the use of sanitary napkins.
