Buchanan Blazes
First it was a lack of electricity.
Now it’s too much wind.
For the second time in 15 days, Anthony Buchanan sprinted to amazing times, but this time his performance will carry an asterisk for being wind-aided.
The University senior won the 100 and 200 meters at the 15th annual Hermiston Kiwanis Invitational on Saturday with times that would be the fourth-best in Washington history if not for the wind.
Buchanan won the 100 in 10.36 seconds and the 200 in 21.21. Both were fully automatic times. Two weeks ago in Yakima, Buchanan ran the 200 in 20.7, a hand-held time.
Buchanan’s effort helped the Titans finish second in the meet with 84-1/2 points. Davis won with 87.
Max Schmidt won the 1,500 meters for U-Hi in 4:09.52 and Tyson Byers won the pole vault at 14-3.
The U-Hi girls also took second with 91 points, 23 behind Richland.
Katie Morton and Heidi Bunkowske went 1-2 in the 400 after Morton was second in the 100 and Bunkowske third in the 200. They also ran on the winning 1,600 relay team. Marci Hulbert was second in the pole vault at 10-6 and Heather Thomason was second in the shot put.
