Robert Mortensen Moscow, Idaho

Celebration of the life of H. Robert “Bob” Mortensen, 78, will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Latah County Fairgrounds Main Exhibit Building in Moscow. Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Mortensen, a longtime Moscow area businessman, died Thursday.

He was born in Moscow and graduated in 1940 from Moscow High School. He attended the University of Idaho and was a member of Delta Chi fraternity before enlisting in the Army during World War II.

Mr. Mortensen served in the South Pacific during the war and then returned to the Moscow area. He was a car salesman for Francisco Motor Co. and in 1948 married Betty Shoop.

He then opened Bob’s Donut Shop and later operated the bowling lanes at the Moscow Elks Lodge before building Bowlerama in Moscow in 1958.

He operated the bowling alley and taught bowling until selling the business in 1992. He was inducted into the Moscow Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1964, served as past secretary of the Idaho Bowling Proprietors Association, and became a member of the Idaho Bowling Council Hall of Fame in 1975. Mr. Mortensen also served as regional vice president and sergeant-at-arms for the Bowling Proprietors Association of America. He was a member of the Moscow Jaycees, the Moscow Chamber of Commerce, the Moscow Elks Lodge, the Moose Lodge, the American Legion, the American Association of Retired Persons, Vandal Boosters and the Idaho Roadrunners.

His wife died in 1996.

Survivors include three daughters, Jane McKune of Olympia, Barbara Scroggins of Longview, Wash., and Peggy Stivers of Maple Valley, Wash.; a son, Brian Mortensen of Olympia; two sisters, Joyce Huffman of Moscow and Jeane McNeilly of Colfax, Wash.; 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Joel Crisp Colfax, Wash.

Service for Joel Patrick Crisp, 43, will be at 2:30 p.m. today at First Baptist Church in Colfax. Burial will follow at Colfax Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Crisp, a University of Idaho employee, died Thursday from injuries suffered while trying to repair a large air intake fan in the Gauss-Johnson Engineering Building on the University of Idaho campus in Moscow.

He was born in Spokane and graduated from Lewis and Clark High School.

Mr. Crisp worked for his stepfather at Robert Shaw Controls.

In 1984 he began working as a control technician at Washington State University. In 1999 he went to work for University of Idaho.

He served on the Colfax City Council for seven years.

Mr. Crisp was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the El Katif Shrine, the Whitman County Shrine Club and the Plumbers and Steam Fitters Union Local 44.

Survivors include his wife, Lynn; three sons, Joel Crisp Jr. of Spokane and Robert and Thomas Crisp, both of Colfax; his father, Charles Crisp of Dayton, Wash.; and a sister, Connie McDaniels of Portland.

Roger Carle Spokane

No service will be held for Roger L. Carle, 46. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Spokane, Mr. Carle died Wednesday.

He was a 15-year Spokane resident and had worked for Cavanaughs Templin’s Resort in Post Falls.

Survivors include four sisters, Mary Saiz of Spokane, Judy Carmona of Bakersfield, Calif., Susan Metcalf of West Covina, Calif., and Tammie Nix of LaPuente, Calif.; and a brother, James Capps of Houston.

Willie Adams Moscow, Idaho

Graveside service for Willie Adams, 88, will be today at 1 p.m. at Elwood Cemetery in the Texas Ridge area near Deary, Idaho. Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Adams, who was born near Deary, died Saturday.

He grew up and attended school in the Deary area and in 1935 married Ruth Dyer. He worked as a heavy-machinery driver for Potlatch Forest at Camp 44 near Avery, Idaho.

Mr. Adams later worked as a psychiatric aide at the state hospital in Orofino, Idaho, and retired after 16 years.

He had lived in Juliaetta, Idaho, and after retirement worked for Bennett Logging. He also built windmills and birdhouses, and attended Juliaetta Nazarene Church.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Karen Waldron of Bovill, Idaho, Ruth-Mary Chase of Renton, Wash., and Connie Adams of Juliaetta; a son, Brent Adams of Riggins, Idaho; 15 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the White Heritage Library in Bovill.

Wayne `Red’ Joern Spokane

Memorial service for Wayne A. “Red” Joern, 83, is planned for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home.

Mr. Joern, who died April 17, was born in Fosston, Minn.

Mr. Joern served in the Army from 1940 until 1978 and was a master sergeant in Army intelligence.

He was a 32-year Spokane resident.

He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 51.

His wife, Dorothy, died in 1979.

Survivors include two sons, David Joern of Spokane and Dennis Joern of Washington state; a sister, Doris Clow of St. Vincent, Minn.; and one grandson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans.

Lorraine Abrahamson Spokane

Funeral Mass for Lorraine Marie Abrahamson, 76, will be at 10 a.m. today at the Long House in Wellpinit, Wash. Burial will follow at the Wellpinit Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Abrahamson, who was born in Desmet, Idaho, died Thursday.

She was a 14-year Spokane resident and a homemaker.

Her husband, Pete, died in 1974.

Survivors include three daughters, Charlene Abrahamson of Wellpinit, Loreena LaFontaine of Ford, Wash., and Brenda Ledesma of Seattle; two sisters, Emma Hendrickx of Tensed, Idaho, and Darlene Johnson of Worley, Idaho; 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Christine Swan Pullman

Viewing for Christine Lynn Swan, 43, will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow. Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Moscow Church of the Nazarene. Mrs. Swan, who was born in Pullman, died Thursday from injuries suffered in an all-terrain vehicle accident near her home.

She graduated in 1975 from Pullman High School and then attended beauty college in Lewiston, and worked as a beautician in Pullman.

In 1977 She married Kelly Johnson. They later divorced.

Mrs. Swan had worked as a cook at the Pullman School District for the past 16 years.

She married Lanny Swan in 1999.

She was active with the Moscow Moose Lodge and outdoor recreation and gardening.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Jennifer and Paula Johnson, both of Pullman; a stepson, Bill Swan of Pullman; her parents, Paul and Dorothy Barton of Yuma, Ariz.; a sister, Karen Steele of Kennewick, Wash.; and one granddaughter, Terra.
