Cda Moves Into First

Coeur d’Alene pitchers allowed three hits in two games Tuesday as the Vikings moved into first place in Border League softball with a pair of big home victories Tuesday.

The Vikings (11-3) moved a half-game ahead of idle Lewiston and are tied with Lake City (10-2) although they have played two more games.

Freshman Devlin Dougherty threw a perfect game through five innings before settling for a two-hitter with eight strikeouts in a 10-0 win over Sandpoint (1-12).

In a 12-2 win over Clarkston (2-7), Cassandra Vig gave up a first-inning single and finished with a one-hitter. She also had two hits, including a three-run double in an eight-run third.

Clarkston only had one hit off Bobbi Darretta of Lake City in an 11-0 Timberwolves win. Ingrid Loechelt and Jill Ashkinos both drove in two runs for the Timberwolves.

In other Border League games, winning pitcher Candice Birchelle’s home run in the bottom of the sixth lifted Cheney (3-8) to a 3-2 win over visiting Post Falls (2-8). Marya LahtiLamb’s two-out, two-run single put the Blackhawks up 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth… . Ellen Shaw tripled in two runs in a three-run second inning as Colville edged visiting West Valley to break a tie between the top two Washington teams. Lindsey Terry started the rally for Colville (7-3) with a triple. She scored on a double by Alicia Mann. Amanda Velikanje reached on an error before Shaw’s triple. Terry had eight strikeouts and no walks for the win. Kristy Alberts had a two-run homer in the third for WV (6-4).

Tiffany Hodahl had two hits, two runs and drove in three as St. Maries defeated visiting Bonners Ferry 11-1 in the Intermountain League. Tammy Addington also had two hits and two runs and drove in a pair. Shena Charles threw a three-hitter to improve to 7-1… . Priest River (5-5) took advantage of 17 walks to coast to a 21-9 win at Kellogg (1-10)… . Lakeland’s chance to clinch the league title was delayed when the Hawks’ game at Timberlake was postponed. The game was rescheduled for Friday.

Baseball

In the Border League, Robert Green belted a two-run homer in the sixth and picked up a save to lead Coeur d’Alene (10-2) to a 7-3 win over visiting Sandpoint (4-9). Nick Zeppi picked up the win and Jason Coleman drove in two runs with sacrifice flies… . Tyler Smith struck out nine to lead Post Falls (4-7) to a 5-2 win at Cheney (5-5). Brian Meyers had a two-run double in the fourth for the Trojans. Ben Woodward as 3 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored… . Tim Gittle’s three-run double highlighted a 6-2 win for Lake City (5-9) over visiting Clarkston (5-3). Brian Babb and Jeff Edwards combined for a three-hitter with five strikeouts… . Colville (8-4) whipped visiting West Valley (1-9) 12-2 as Ryan Bradeen drove in three runs and Joe Spears and Ryan Finley had two each. Jeff Banich scattered seven hits for the win. On Monday, the Indians swept a doubleheader in Clarkston 11-7 and 4-0 to break a tie for the top spot among the Washington schools. Trent Duffey took a perfect game into the seventh inning before settling for a two-hitter in St. Maries’ 5-3 win over visiting Bonners Ferry (5-6) in the Intermountain League. Duffey (5-0) lost his perfect game when Shane Hoover led off the seventh with a bloop single. St. Maries (10-1) made it difficult on its hurler with five errors in the last inning. Duffey also had two hits, and Kyle Stevenson had two crucial RBIs in the bottom of the sixth… . Lakeland’s game at Timberlake was rained out and will be made up on Friday.

Track

West Valley beat Clarkston in a photo finish in the 1,600-meter relay to win a Frontier League girls track meet 78-71 at Clarkston. The Eagles were up by two points heading into the last event. Shannon Groh won the discus and javelin and Kelly Cole won the 200 and long jump for the Eagles. Clarkston kept pace as Katie Moat won the 100 hurdles and long jump. Katie Morrison won the 300 hurdles and triple jump and Kathy Reale swept the distances… . On the boys side, West Valley won 15 of 17 events, with Ryan Kettleson winning three and Dan Ferguson two, as the Eagles clinched a tie for the league title with a 119-26 win over the Bantams. Kettleson won the sprints and Ferguson won the high jump and triple jump. … Justin Drake won the 100, 200 and long jump, Matt Snook took the hurdles and Travis Sommerlot won the shot put and javelin as Colville topped visiting Cheney 82-63… . The Indians made it a sweep when the girls won 96-45. Dana Tripp won two sprints, Shannon McGrane won the hurdles and Crystal Evans took the distances for Colville. Ashly Pardun of Cheney won the shot put and discus, throwing the shot 39-4-1/2.

Washington

Steve Hare made sure North Central regained first place in the Greater Spokane League in style.

Hare, a junior right-hander, threw a no-hitter as the Indians dropped Shadle Park 6-0 at Sandberg Field Tuesday afternoon.

Combined with Rogers’ 4-3 win over Ferris, NC (9-2) is one win ahead of the Saxons and Central Valley and two games up on Shadle (7-4).
