Przekwas Fills Final Two Spots
The Washington State University women’s basketball program has added a pair of signees for the 2000-01 season, coach Jenny Przekwas announced Tuesday.
The signing of Brittney Hawks (Rexburg, Idaho/College of Eastern Utah) and Whitney Martindale (Salem, Ore./Chemeketa CC) closed out the WSU recruiting class at seven.
“Brittney plays a post and at 6-foot-2 will add much needed size and depth in the paint, and as MVP of Region 18, brings valuable success to our program,” Przekwas said. “Whitney will most likely redshirt next season.
“She’s a strong rebounder and aggressive scorer. Both players bring experience to the new look of the Cougars team next year.”
Hawks earned a second-team national junior college All-America selection last season after averaging 20.4 points and 10.7 rebounds at College of Eastern Utah.
“One-on-one, I haven’t seen anybody that can handle Brittney,” College of Eastern Utah coach Dave Paur said. “She was single-covered in two games last season and scored 40 and 35 points in those games.”
Martindale, a 5-10 guard/forward, averaged 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Softball
Rebecca Triplett threw a four-hit shutout and went 3 for 4 at the plate to send Community Colleges of Spokane to a 7-0 win over Big Bend CC and a sweep of their NWAACC softball doubleheader at Moses Lake.
The Sasquatch (21-9, 19-3 Northeast Division) got a four-hitter from Kylee Curry and Nicki Meyer’s solo homer en route to a 3-1 victory over the Vikings in the first game.
CCS remains a game back of first-place Walla Walla.
Golf
The University of Idaho men’s golf team, seeded last after a last-place finish in 1999, endured a two-hole playoff to upend favored New Mexico State at Serrano Country Club in El Dorado Hills, Calif., and win the Big West Conference championship.
Doug McClure tied for third (215) to lead the Vandals. Ritzville’s Ryan Benzel tied for 12th at 222 for UI.
The Idaho women (940), also seeded last, took second place behind New Mexico State (900).
Third-round 70s by sopho more Jon Reehoorn and freshman Dustin White helped Washington State post the fifth-best score on the second day of the Pacific-10 Conference Championship being played at Arizona State’s Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz.
The Cougars are tied with Southern California for ninth and will be looking to avoid their fourth straight last-place finish at the conference tournament today.
Jeremy Taylor continues to pace WSU, shooting a third-round 72 to keep his score an even-par 216. He enters the fourth round tied for 25th.
Returning to the Eugene (Ore.) Country Club after a disastrous first-round 321 on Monday, Washington State put together the sixth-best score of the day with a second-round 304 but remains in last place at the women’s Pac-10 championships going into today’s final round.
Jennifer Dowd, at 151, is the top Cougar.
