Othello

Turnout was dismal at a public comment session held by the Othello School Board on a proposed new track. OHS cannot have home meets due to the condition of the track. A new one would cost $250,000 - something the board wants to make sure the community wants before voting for the expenditure.

Ferry County

Republic

The King of Rock and Roll will make a special appearance today during the presentation of “I Saw Elvis at the Republic Library.” The locally written play features a bevy of local talent, several space aliens and a cougar. Admission is free and refreshments will follow the belly laughs. The curtain rises at 7 p.m. at the library.

Lincoln County

Davenport

Locals and visitors alike be warned. Crossing the solid yellow line on Davenport’s main drag will cost you a cool $337. Officers patrolling Morgan Street, aka SR 2, are tired of seeing drivers cross the thick yellow line. Many violators plead ignorance, as a double yellow line generally signifies a no-passing zone. Local police ask all to refrain from the illegal left turn while looking for a parking spot.

Pend Oreille County

Newport

The town is getting a last-minute spruce-up for Monday’s visit from Gov. Gary Locke. The last governor to visit town was Dixie Lee Ray. County Commissioner Joel Jacobsen says Locke will visit the courthouse at 11 a.m. to discuss county and state concerns. After the meeting, he’ll tour the town, then meet with the public at noon at Centennial Plaza.

Cheney

Eastern Washington University’s planning program received a three-year, $105,000 grant that will help school officials escalate the Pathways to Progress downtown revitalization project.

Stevens County

Colville

Kentucky Fried Chicken and Taco Bell are moving to town and will share the same roof. The restaurant combo is looking for 30 employees. A job orientation for interested workers will be held at the CHS auditorium on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The restaurants plan to open in early October, if not before.

IDAHO

Benewah County

St. Maries

Debbie Key was hired by the Benewah County assessor’s office as a mapper. Key was the manager of the St. Maries Chamber of Commerce. She’ll replace Kathy Tweedy. The job includes updating area maps and processing land titles and deeds when land ownership changes. Key and her husband, Tony, have a teenage daughter, Jessie.

Bonner County

Sandpoint

Sandpoint High School students Janessa Frengle, Steven Hammond, Kelly Akers and Matt Gil and Lake Pend Oreille Alternative School student Brittany Bergman will attend the Youth Leadership Institute in Casper, Wyo., today through Thursday. The camp will help develop leadership skills, team-building abilities and a better understanding of the impact of actions and inactions. The Bonner County Human Rights Task Force and the Northwest Coalition are providing scholarships for the five students to attend.

Boundary County

Bonners Ferry

A senior citizens Checkers Social is set for 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 31 at the Boundary County Fairgrounds. Only 18 players will be able to play so early registration is recommended. Registration forms are available at the extension office and must be returned by Aug. 18. Forms will also be available at the fairgrounds office after Aug. 9.

Kootenai County

Post Falls

A free summer art camp will be presented 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily Monday through Friday at the Seltice Elementary School by Art on the Edge. Several art projects are planned and include making a musical instrument and playing it in an exhibit at 5 p.m. Friday. Youth 6 to 19 years old who live in the Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls areas may attend. Register by calling (208) 777-8938.

Clarkia

Scores of professional motorcyclists will race at the first-ever Fossil Bowl here on Sept. 3 and 4. The motocross race is part of a racing circuit in which professionals compete for $5,000 in prize money. The Clarkia track is at 85th and Plum. Smelterville

An auction will help cover medical expenses for Dale Hunt, a longtime teacher and coach for the Kellogg School District, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Libby

The Lincoln County Amateur Radio Club held a raffle to raise funds to purchase a radio frequency repeater. The repeater enables club members to communicate a greater distance with the low wattage radio equipment they own. Members offer their skills and equipment during community emergencies or activities if needed. Christine Pollman of Missoula was the winner of the paddle boat raffle.
