Fires Destroys House, Portable Classrooms
A house and two portable classrooms at Eastmont Junior High School in East Wenatchee burned Sunday night in a grass fire, Douglas County firefighters said.
The one-acre fire was still under investigation but is believed to have been set. Damages are estimated at $250,000.
The fire began about 7 p.m. on the school grounds. Wind helped the fire spread to the portable classrooms and the nearby residence. Three other houses were in jeopardy, said Scott Miller, a Douglas County Fire District 2 firefighter.
“It was extreme fire behavior,” Miller said. “It was cooking on.”
About 50 firefighters from five different units responded to the blaze. Crews continued to mop up Sunday night.
Miller said the portables are salvageable and the home may be repairable.
