Surfers Are Getting Personal

Compiled By Bill Sallquist

Once the domain of geeky types, personal servers are going mainstream as the skills required for Web-site hosting and Net-based file sharing fall within the grasp of ordinary Netizens.

Motives run the gamut from a desire to avoid the banner ads and pop-up windows that clog free Web-hosting sites to a craving for online independence and complete control over personal content.

One factor fueling the growth of personal servers is the spread of high-speed Internet connections at home and work.

* Interacting with TV: Despite mixed results from early experiments, interactive television has a bright future, boosters say.

Interactive TV enables viewers to sort programs based on network, time or genre using an interactive programming guide. Viewers can also make purchases and check e-mail - all with the remote control.

Still, it’s unlikely that interactive TV, which requires digital cable connections, will achieve widespread availability for at least five years.
