Donald and Patricia Lindsay Spokane

Vigil service for Donald P. “Don” and Mary Patricia (Lally) Lindsay will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Sacred Hearth Roman Catholic Church. Inurnment is planned for 9 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Cross Cemetery. Memorial Mass will follow at 11 a.m. at the church. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. and Mrs. Lindsay were both lifetime Spokane residents. He died June 22. He was 84. She died Aug. 1. She was 82.

She graduated from Holy Names Academy and received a degree from Kelsey-Baird Business School.

He graduated from Gonzaga High School and attended the University of Washington but left to join the Air Force during World War II. He served as a first lieutenant.

Mrs. Lindsay worked as a secretary for her father, Thomas A.E. Lally, an attorney in Spokane, until she married. After marrying, she became a homemaker.

Mr. Lindsay was president and chief executive officer of Lincoln Mutual Savings Bank for more than 25 years. He served as president of the Spokane Chamber of Commerce in the 1980s. He also served on the Washington state and Spokane arts commissions.

She was past president and member of the Junior League of Spokane.

He was past president and member of the Spokane Country Club. He was also a member of the Manito Golf and Country and the Empire Club.

Mr. and Mrs. Lindsay were both members of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church.

They are survived by three daughters, Karen Warrick and Bridget Carsten, both of Spokane, and Monica Harris of Bellingham; and five grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Poor Clare Nuns, the American Lung Association or the American Heart Association.

Paul Schafer Spokane

Memorial service for Paul J. Schafer, 88, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Christ Lutheran Church in Odessa, Wash. A second memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Rockwood South Retirement Center in Spokane. Strate Funeral Home in Davenport, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schafer, who died Tuesday, was born in Seattle.

He graduated in 1931 from Odessa High School. In 1941 he married Dorothy Logsdon.

He was a farmer in the Odessa and Kahlotus, Wash., area. He also was involved in the formation of the Washington Association of Wheat Growers.

Mr. Schafer and his wife moved to Spokane six years ago.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, the Odessa Grange and the Odessa Masonic Lodge. He was a charter member of the Odessa Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Evan Schafer of Spokane, Keith Schafer of Odessa and Reid Schafer of Kahlotus; a daughter, Jane Hilliard of Moses Lake; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Blanche Garcia Fernwood, Idaho

Memorial service for Blanche E. Garcia will be at 10 a.m. today in the CPA Building in Fernwood. The Neptune Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Garcia, 89, died Monday.

She was born in Gifford, Idaho, where she graduated from high school.

She married J.H. Lingo in 1930, and they moved to Electric City, Wash., in 1936.

In 1946 they moved to Coeur d’Alene, where they owned and operated the Surf Tavern until her husband’s death in 1953.

In 1965 she married Anthony Garcia and in 1967 moved to Fernwood. Mrs. Garcia was a member of the Senior Citizens of Fernwood.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, Skip Lingo of Fernwood and Jack Lingo of Great Falls, Mont.; two daughters, Charlotte Morse of Spokane and Jorene Florea of Post Falls; 12 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Gladys Olson Chewelah, Wash.

Memorial service for Gladys Heineck Olson, 94, will be at 11 a.m. today at Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Chewelah.

Born in Mondovi, Wis., Mrs. Olson died Tuesday.

She graduated from Mondovi High School, MacPhail School of Music in Minneapolis, the University of Wisconsin and Eastern Washington University.

Mrs. Olson taught school in Missouri and Montana, as well as in Chewelah and Valley, Wash.

She married John Phinny and they lived in Seattle for 11 years. The couple divorced and she moved to Spokane.

In 1957 she married George Olson and they lived in Chewelah.

She was a member of the PEO, the Washington State Retired Teachers Association, the Chewelah Federated Women’s Club, Delta Kappa Gamma and the United Church of Christ.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Mrs. Olson is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Clark Bippes Spokane

Memorial service for Clark M. Bippes, 54, will be at 10 a.m. today at Hennessey Valley Funeral Home.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Bippes died Sunday.

He served in the Army during the Vietnam War.

Mr. Bippes worked as a salesman in the lubrication business.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Patsy; a son, Michael Bippes of Spokane; a daughter, Charlene Rios of Moses Lake; his mother, Marie Bippes of Spokane; two brothers, Monty Bippes of Spokane and Jack Bippes of Utah; two sisters, Gloria Albrecht and Shirley Chavez, both of Spokane; and a grandchild.

Clifford Pittman Spokane

Service for Clifford W. Pittman, 85, will be at 1 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Private burial will be held at Fairmount Memorial Park.

A 53-year Spokane resident, Mr. Pittman died Monday. He was born in Clear Lake, Wis.

He worked as a laborer at Kaiser Aluminum’s Mead plant and was a member of Teamsters Union Local 329.

His wife, Minnie, died in 1981.

There are no surviving family members.

Bernice Larson Spokane

Visitation for Bernice Larson, 83, will be today from 5 to 7 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene with Rosary to follow at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral Mass will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Spirit Lake, Idaho. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Spirit Lake.

Mrs. Larson, who was born in Wallace, died Tuesday.

She grew up in Spokane and attended Marycliff High School before graduating from Lewis and Clark High School. She attended Marylhurst College.

Mrs. Larson married Chas “Bus” Larson in 1939. They moved to Spirit Lake in 1941 and operated Spirit Lake Fur Farm, where she designed and sold furs under the name Bernice’s Furs.

She also obtained a real estate and insurance license and opened the Larson Agency in Spirit Lake, which she operated for more than 25 years.

She retired in the early 1980s and moved to Coeur d’Alene. She moved to Spokane in 1997.

Mrs. Larson was a member of the Coeur d’Alene Rambling Rovers, the 3 C’s, and the St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church Altar Society.

She was active in singing, writing and composing music, traveling and golf.

Her husband died in 1976.

Survivors include three daughters, Judy Hassell of Coeur d’Alene, Sherry Haislet of Spirit Lake, and Mary Lou Talbot of Montpelier, Idaho; a brother, Richard Chastek of Spokane; her companion, Raymond Seaman of Spokane; nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Dale Alexander Spokane

Visitation for Dale V. Alexander, 74, will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Service is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2nd Ward, 723 W. Indiana.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Alexander died Tuesday.

He served in the Navy during World War II and worked as a brick mason at Kaiser Aluminum for 36 years. He retired in 1983.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Rose; two sons, Michael Alexander of Elk and Stephen Alexander of Bellingham; a daughter, Kathryn Alexander of Salem, Ore.; three sisters, Christina Maxfield of Spokane, Ulysse Nightheart of Cheney and Maxine Mohney of Waitsburg, Wash.; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Inga McLean Spokane

Graveside service for Inga Marie (Thompson) McLean, 93, was held Wednesday at Fairmount Memorial Park. Heritage Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. McLean, who was born in Winona, Minn., died Saturday.

Her family moved to Spokane when she was an infant.

In 1941 she married Robert McLean.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Sons of Norway.

Her husband died in 1978.

Survivors include a son, Robert McLean of Spokane; and a stepdaughter, Kitty Smith of Seattle.

Charles Risch Spokane

Memorial service for Charles E. “Chuck” Risch, 84, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church. The Neptune Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Risch, who was born in Deer Lodge, Mont., died Tuesday.

He served in the Navy from 1933 to 1937.

Mr. Risch moved to Anchorage, Alaska, where he worked as a carman for the railroad.

In 1940 he married June Bach.

He retired from the railroad in 1970 and moved his family to Wenatchee.

In 1983 he moved to Spokane and was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Jack Risch of Spokane; a daughter, Mary Stavros of Las Vegas; two sisters, Lucille McCann of Spokane and Dorothy Mathews of Anchorage; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Cecil Martens Snohomish, Wash.

Memorial service for Cecil H. Martens, 82, will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene with military rites by Coeur d’Alene Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Martens, who was born in Burlington, Colo., died Monday.

He lived in Wichita, Kan., and worked as a mechanic and machinist for Douglas Aircraft and Boeing Aircraft prior moving to Post Falls in 1955.

Mr. Martens worked at various jobs in the Coeur d’Alene area and moved to the Seattle area in the early 1990s.

Mr. Martens was a member of the Coeur d’Alene Veterans of Foreign Wars Post.

Survivors include his former wife, Addie Martens; a son, Eugene Martens of Bothell, Wash.; two sisters, Edith Reed of Coeur d’Alene and Grace Jackson of Cheney; a brother, Paul Martens of Dalton Gardens, Idaho; two stepbrothers, John Millheisler of Coeur d’Alene and Herbert Millheisler of Austin, Texas; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

John Becker Spokane

No service will be held for John R. Becker, 70, at his request. The Neptune Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

A 48-year Spokane resident, Mr. Becker died Tuesday. He was born in Coeur d’Alene.

After moving to Sandpoint with his family, he moved to Spokane in 1952.

He worked as a life insurance agent for Banker’s Life for 10 years. He retired in 1967.

Mr. Becker was a member of Sinto Senior Center.

Survivors include a son, John Becker Jr. of Spokane; two daughters, Shannon Walko and Sharon Burnett, both of Seattle; a sister, Karen McAlpin of Spokane; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
