Adams County Othello
Golfing brothers Randy and Derek Potter, once teammates, will be competitors. Randy, the older, played two years for the Community Colleges of Spokane. Now, he’s on a Gonzaga golf scholarship. Derek, a 2000 OHS grad, will be on the St. Martins College team. They’ll meet up several times per season.
Ferry County Republic
Discussion is heating up on the proposed Heritage Loop through Ferry County, Okanogan County and British Columbia. The three entities recently held discussions with Border Patrol officials. The idea behind a heritage, or tourism loop, is that folks can have free movement between the two countries for cultural activities.
Grant County Coulee City
School kids will be back at their desks here Aug. 23. Students not registered are asked to come to the school for class schedules and teacher assignments. Athletes are asked to get their physicals before the first day of practice.
Lincoln County Davenport
The school district, in the wake of a bond defeat, sent out 1,561 patron surveys seeking input on capital facilities needs. The district is compiling responses and hopes to have a plan by early fall. Twenty-six percent of those polled responded.
Pend Oreille County Newport
The Washington State University Cooperative Extension will have a master gardener available each Thursday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. to give advice. The master gardener will help with problems such as identifying plants, as well as regional growing seasons and conditions.
Spokane County Liberty Lake
Today is the annual Liberty Lake Loop. There is a quarter-mile run for kids under 10 at 8:15 a.m. at Pavillion Park, at Country Vista Drive and Molter Road. Folks over 10 can do a 4-mile run-walk at 9:15 a.m. It winds through Liberty Lake’s streets and over several short hills. Afterward, contestants will be served a breakfast of bagels, fresh fruit and other healthy fare. Registration is $20 for adults and $15 for children.
Stevens County Hunters
The Hunters Community Fair - the “oldest one-day fair in Washington” - will be Aug. 19. Festivities include a parade, crafts fair, entertainment, kiddy games and plenty of food. Hunters is north of Fort Spokane on Highway 231.
Whitman County Colfax
The county Parks and Recreation Department has closed Kamiak Butte because of fire danger. The butte, a local hiking favorite just north of Pullman, will reopen after the area receives sufficient moisture.
IDAHO
Benewah County St. Maries
Valley Vista Care Center is expanding and remodeling. The Behavior Care Unit will add more resident rooms, a visiting/sun room, and the kitchen will be expanded. The Physical Therapy Department will expand and get an aquatic therapy pool. Some of the general resident rooms will be refurbished and a new beauty shop added. When all is done, the nursing staff office will be moved upstairs.
Bonner County Sandpoint
Fire danger is very high, according to the Idaho Department of Lands. There have been dozens of fires, 27 caused by people. Some 14 fires were caused by lightning. Burning permits are not being issued.
Boundary County Bonners Ferry
The ranger district has opened some roads for camping and hiking that are usually gated off for wildlife security. The lower Italian Road 2258 is open at Gate 71 and Road 2443E is open at Gate 98. On the eastern side of the county, Gate 20 on Road 2225 and Gate 24 on Road 2662 are also open for the summer. Road 2209 in the Katka Peak area is closed now and Saddle Pass Road which is open at Gate 41 will close Aug. 16.
Kootenai County Rathdrum
The Parks and Recreation department has opened registration for fall soccer. Two divisions are available: the Micro Division (for ages 4-5) and the Mini Division (age 6). It costs $11, $8 for Rathdrum residents. Required player T-shirts cost $15.
Registration is 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at city hall through Sept. 1. Games will be on Saturdays beginning Sept. 23. Call (208) 687-2399.
Latah County Moscow
County commissioners added $96,000 to the County Fair building projects budget Monday. The money would be used to construct a parking lot, a priority according to fair managers. In May, voters rejected a $4.2 million fairground remodeling bond. The fair board has since been working to come up with money for construction and remodeling projects.
Shoshone County Kellogg
The school board approved the price of school breakfasts and lunches for the school year Tuesday. Elementary school breakfast will be 90 cents, and lunch $1.50. Secondary school breakfast will be 90 cents, and lunch $1.75. Adult breakfast will be $1.30, and lunch $2.35. The board also approved one-year teaching contracts for five teachers: Patty Hoeck, Kellogg Middle School, science; Lisa Cheney, KMS, science; Tracy Ketchum, Sunnyside Elementary, first grade; Janice Berti, Sunnyside Elementary, fourth grade; and Melaine Koziuk, Pinehurst Elementary, first grade.
