Hand-Drumming Classes Offered At Weekend Respite
Drum Brothers and Community Through Rhythm are offering a “Rhythm Retreat” the weekend of Sept. 8-10 at Bear Paw Camp on the shores of the Pend Oreille River north of Newport, Wash.
The retreat offers West African and contemporary hand-drumming classes, group discussion and sharing, evening celebration circles, community vegetarian meals, and free time to hike, canoe or sauna.
It begins at 7 p.m. Sept. 8 and ends Sept. 10 at 4 p.m. The cost is $180, which includes all instruction, meals and lodging. Deadline to register is Aug. 31. For more information, call Community Through Rhythm at 921-0027 or Satsang Music at (406) 726-4448.
Auditions
The Spokane Children’s Theatre will hold auditions for “Charlotte’s Web - The Musical” on Aug. 21 and 22 at 7 p.m. at St. Aloysius School Cafeteria, 611 E. Mission.
Needed is a company of 24 (more or less) boys, girls, men and women, including at least four to five young girls; two to three young boys; four to six adult men; four to six adult women; two to three teen boys; and two to three teen girls. Auditioners need to prepare a song not longer than two minutes and bring sheet music. An accompanist will be provided. Wear clothes comfortable for moving creatively.

Work by Spokane painter Donald Clegg has been selected for this year’s Adirondacks National Exhibition of American Watercolors, held annually in the hamlet of Old Forge, N.Y.
The exhibition awards 30 prizes amounting to $13,000 in cash and medals. Nearly 900 works were submitted and 106 were selected for display.
The Washington State Insurance Council has awarded a $5,000 grant to the Spokane Arts Commission for future downtown youth murals projects.
