WASHINGTON

Adams County Othello

Darin Haworth, 13, is the third Haworth boy to earn an Eagle Scout award. For his project, Darin built a brick “OHS” sign at the northwest corner of the Othello High School football field. The project also included a flagpole erected behind the sign. U.S. Rep. George Nethercutt, R-Wash., supplied the flag, which had flown over the White House on March 14.

Ferry County Republic

The county is looking for a less expensive way to run a hazardous household waste program, as well as how to better serve the public. Waste management coordinator Louis Miller recently helped commissioners study options. The board decided to let Miller start a program with training from Spokane County. Disposal days will be at least once a month instead of only once a year.

Grant County Moses Lake

A video camera in his patrol car would not have saved the life of state trooper Tim Saunders. Still, his uncle Ken Saunders says, every Washington State Patrol vehicle should have a video camera for safety reasons. Because of Ken Saunders’ belief and a $2,500 check in his slain nephew’s name, one WSP patrol car in the Moses Lake detachment has been outfitted with a camera.

Lincoln County Odessa

Local residents rallied to help the Janet Heimbigner family harvest its remaining 160 acres of wheat after the family’s hired man, Tom Wolsborn, died. Six combines and a fleet of trucks were used to finish the job in five hours. Wolsborn had been a fifth-grade teacher and coach at the Odessa school.

Pend Oreille County Newport

A campaign to control purple loosestrife is under way, with the county Weed Control Board spraying the noxious weeds with a liquid herbicide. Areas being targeted include the shoreline of Ione Millpond, the mouths of Big and Little Muddy creeks, the western shore of the Pend Oreille River and the marshy area at the southern tip of Lake Sacheen. The community beach and outlet of Wilderness Lake and Fan Lake also are on the list.

Spokane County Spokane

Corbin Senior Activity Center, 827 W. Cleveland, is putting on a Mustang car show and barbecue Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Festivities also will include music and a dunk tank.

Stevens County Colville

The annual egg toss at the Colville Rendezvous drew scores of teams vying for a $500 prize and bragging rights for the longest throw. Ben Hankins and Seth Forster were this year’s winners, with a toss of 96 feet, 4 inches. The record of 103 feet, 2 inches was set last year.

Whitman County Pullman

The city Parks and Recreation Department is planning a final teen fling before the end of summer. On Friday, students starting the sixth, seventh or eighth grades are invited to Reaney Park Pool from 8 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. The cost is $3 at the door.

IDAHO

Benewah County St. Maries

Benewah County’s unemployment rate of 11.3 percent in July was the highest in the Panhandle and second-highest in the state, yet it was lower than last July’s county rate of 15 percent. The state Labor Department attributes the high rate to the poor lumber market and local mill closures. Idaho’s unemployment rate went from 5.3 percent in July 1999 to 4.4percent in July 2000.

Bonner County Sandpoint

Temporary surface work will begin at 9 a.m. and is to be completed by 4 p.m. today on a section of Lincoln Avenue in Sandpoint. There may be some traffic delays, but no closures are expected.

Boundary County Bonners Ferry

The Bonners Ferry High School yearbook staff won all three grand prizes in Taylor Publishing’s summer workshop at the University of Puget Sound. The staff competed with 25 other Northwest schools and universities.

Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene

The public library has received four new computers - two complete with Internet service - and software thanks to a $16,263 grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, according to a library news release. A library open house will begin at 4:30 p.m. Monday to showcase the computers. Along with the computers and Internet service, the library has a computerized card catalog, e-mail capabilities, special youth and children’s programs and a Web site, http://www.dmi.net/cdalibrary.

Latah County Moscow

A school bus stop hut, created by two former Washington State University architecture professors, has received a top architectural award. The American Institute of Architecture cited Michael Culpepper and Greg Tew for their design. The hut, at Nearing and Saddle Ridge roads, features wooden bench seats, a semi-rounded “A” shape and metal siding that reflects the scenery. The hut was funded by a $1,500 grant.

Shoshone County Wallace

Old books from the estate of a former resident, as well as from the Wallace Public Library, Wallace Senior High School and Silver Hill Middle School, will be for sale in the basement of the library from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. Prices will start at 50 cents, and older books will be offered in a silent auction.

MONTANA

Lincoln County Libby

Five Libby baseball players have been named to the Western A Northern Division All-Conference teams in American Legion baseball. Kyle Volkers and John Burrell were selected for the first team. Cory Farmer, Ryan Hendrickson and Kelly Rooney were chosen for the second team. The season ended in July for the Logger Legion team, which compiled a 24-18 record.
