UI Welcomes Jones’ Return

A few days after losing one of their top receivers in Rossi Martin, the Idaho Vandals welcomed the return of Ethan Jones.

Jones had been a spectator at practice while waiting to receive academic clearance, which came through on Wednesday. Jones, who had 19 receptions for 278 yards last season, participated in Wednesday’s afternoon practice. The junior from Battle Ground, Wash., also started in 1998, finishing with 20 catches for 438 yards.

Martin was ruled academically ineligible a few days before Idaho’s first practice on Monday.

Bulldog becomes Vandal

Sandpoint High senior Tyler Scott has orally committed to play football for the Vandals.

Scott, a 6-foot-4, 230-pound middle linebacker, made his decision shortly after attending Idaho’s team camp in June.

Scott visited with former Bulldogs Ryan Knowles and Paul Nieman before making his decision. Knowles starts at defensive end and Nieman is a backup safety for the Vandals.

Golf

Eric Hastings of Spokane Country Club won two matches on Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the 46th Pacific Northwest Golf Association Junior Boys Amateur Championship at Beach Grove Golf Course in Delta, British Columbia.

Hastings defeated Tim Feenstra of Homestead Golf and Country Club 3 and 2 in the first round. He followed with a 3 and 1 second-round win over Trevor Loe of Sahalee Country Club.

Craig Leslie of Manito Golf and Country Club won his first-round match, but lost in the second round to Ryan Keeney of Sahalee.

The quarterfinals and semifinals are today.
