Obituaries

Margaret (Melzer) Burrell Spokane

Graveside service for Margaret Marie (Melzer) Burrell, 88, will be at 1 p.m. today at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mrs. Burrell died Aug. 3.

She was a homemaker, a member of St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church and the Eagles Lodge.

Her husband of 59 years, Ernest, died in 1992.

Survivors include two daughters, Pat Burchett of Spokane and Mary Hill of Arizona; a sister, Doris Duggan of Springfield, Mass.; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Samuel Price Mill Creek, Wash.

No service will be held for Samuel B. Price, 90, at his request. Cremation Society Northwest in Lynnwood, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Price, who was born in Convoy, Ohio, died Aug. 9.

During World War II he worked for Irrigation Services in Montana.

He lived in the Spokane area for 36 years. He spent 10 years in Greenbluff, where he owned and operated a grocery store. He lived in the Spokane Valley from 1956 to 1982. He owned East Bowl, now called Players and Spectators.

Mr. Price retired and moved to California, where he lived for 15 years. He moved to Mill Creek three years ago.

Mr. Price was a member of the Grange, Country Homes Kiwanis Club, the Rotary Club and the Washington State Bowling Proprietors Association.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Katharine; two sons, Blaine Price of Edmonds, Wash., and Curt Price of Jacksonville, Fla; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Alma Brannan Spokane

Service for Alma Marie Brannan, 88, will be at 10 a.m. today at Hillyard Assembly of God Church. Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery in Deer Park. Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Brannan, who died Tuesday, was born in Spiro, Okla.

She lived in Modesto, Calif., and Jacksonville, Ark., before moving to Spokane 14 years ago.

Mrs. Brannan was a homemaker and a member of Hillyard Assembly of God Church.

Her husband, Earl, died in 1976.

Survivors include four daughters, Mary Soelter of Spokane, Louise Shatswell of Modesto, Christine Lanuza of Stockton, Calif., and Ethel Hooper of Jacksonville; a brother, Charles Dearmore of Bakersfield, Calif.; a sister, Cecil Brewer of Bakersfield; 22 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Larry Henderson Newport, Wash.

Graveside service for Larry Wayne Henderson, 61, will be at 1 p.m. today at the Newport Cemetery. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of arrangements.

Born in St. Joseph, Mo., Mr. Henderson died Tuesday.

He worked as a clerk and supervisor in the grocery industry in California.

Mr. Henderson moved to Newport in 1988.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathy Gaffer of Colorado Springs and Laurie Spicer of Orangevale, Calif.; two sons, Mike Henderson of Lodi, Calif., and Eddie Henderson of Elk Grove, Calif.; two brothers, Robert and Jerry Henderson, both of Newport; three sisters, Nancy Hawley of Mojave, Calif., Patricia Porter of Las Vegas and Cheryl Gilkey of Santa Paula, Calif.; and 10 grandchildren.

Lester Knutson Spokane

Private service will be held for Lester R. Knutson, 85. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Knutson, who was born in Spring Valley, Wis., died Aug. 10.

He graduated from high school in Spring Valley. In 1938 he moved to Spokane.

In 1942 he married Kathleen Arrison.

During World War II he served in the Navy as an aviation mechanic in the Pacific Theater.

Mr. Knutson worked as a carpenter at Kaiser Aluminum Trentwood for more than 30 years and retired in 1978.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Jan Knutson of Coeur d’Alene, Sharon Gernert of Kooskia, Idaho, and Kristin Knutson of Arlington, Wash.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Gwen McCulloch Yakima

No service will be held for Gwen McCulloch, a former Spokane resident, at her request. Keith and Keith Funeral Home in Yakima is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. McCulloch, who was born in Pasco, died Tuesday. She was 90.

She lived in Spokane from 1930 to 1965, when she moved to Los Angeles. She moved to Yakima in 1975.

Mrs. McCulloch was a homemaker and pianist. She was involved in fundraising for the YMCA.

Her husband, Mark, died in 1957.

Survivors include two sons, Joe McCulloch of Seattle and Theodore McCulloch of Anacortes, Wash.; a daughter, Carolyn Palmer of Everett; two brothers, Ken Merrick of Loon Lake, Wash., and Conrad Merrick of San Francisco; and four grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the YMCA or the YWCA.

James Haynes Las Vegas

Memorial Mass for James Michael “Jim” Haynes will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Church in Spokane. Inurnment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Spokane. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Spokane, Mr. Haynes died Aug. 10. He was 52.

He graduated from Gonzaga Prep in 1966 and served in the Army from 1968 to 1970. He was stationed in Korea.

He worked as a firefighter for the Spokane Fire Department for 23 years and retired in 1998.

Mr. Haynes moved to Las Vegas one year ago.

Survivors include his wife, Jennifer; a son, Shad Haynes of Hawaii; two daughters, Shawna Haynes of Seattle and Tricia Haynes of Tukwila, Wash.; his parents, Jim and Peggy Haynes of Spokane; and three sisters, Terry Bray and Vicky Miller, both of Spokane, and Mary Shane of Chandler, Ariz.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Morning Star Boys Ranch.

Russell Taylor Spokane

Funeral Mass for Russell M. Taylor, 88, was Thursday at St. Paschal Roman Catholic Church. Burial followed at St. Joseph Cemetery.

A 40-year Spokane resident, Mr. Taylor died Tuesday. He was born in Lewiston.

He served in the Army during World War II.

Mr. Taylor worked as a bartender at The Ridpath and Davenport hotels.

He was a member of St. Paschal Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1474.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Marie.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Poor Clare Nuns.

Myra Alt Spokane

Service for Myra H. Alt, 45, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Park.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mrs. Alt died last Friday.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist church.

Survivors include her husband, Michael; a son, James Alt; a sister, Mary Davidson; and two brothers, Chuck and Art Murch Jr.
