(From Business beat column, August 27, 2000): Dr. Karla E. Khan has joined the medical staff of Holy Family Hospital in the practice of obstetrics and gynecology. Khan received her medical degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1995 and then completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She has joined the North Spokane Women’s Clinic. Her name was misspelled in last Sunday’s column.
New faces:
Dr. Karla E. Kahn has joined the medical staff of Holy Family Hospital in the practice of obstetrics and gynecology. Kahn received her medical degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1995 and then completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She has joined the North Spokane Women’s Clinic, which is located in the Holy Family Medical Building, 235 E. Rowan.
Sharon Mowry has been named director of the Department of Graduate Studies in Education at Whitworth College. Her responsibilities include overseeing the GSE office, program faculty and staff; developing and maintaining relationships with public school administrators; and maintaining active involvement in state, regional and national school administration associations. Mowry will also serve as an associate professor of education.
She previously was assistant superintendent for instruction for West Valley School District and has worked as a principal at schools in Washington and California. Mowry earned a Ph.D. in educational leadership from Gonzaga University and a master’s in educational administration from Fresno Pacific College.
Gonzaga University’s office of student life has hired Beth Hellwig-Olson as dean of student services. Hellwig-Olson, who has more than 20 years of student affairs experience, previously worked at the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, where she was director of student life for the past eight years. She earned a master’s in education from Colorado State University and a doctorate in student personnel administration from the University of Northern Colorado.
Post Falls-based Lifestream Technologies Inc. has named Edward R. Siemens as chief operating officer. Siemens has 15 years of experience in home health care product management, most recently as president of Omron Healthcare Inc. He joined Omron as vice president of marketing in 1992 and served as senior vice president of marketing before becoming president in 1999. He earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from California College of Arts & Crafts and a master’s in business administration from Pepperdine University.
The following people have joined Washington State University at Spokane:
Kerry Brooks joined the Interdisciplinary Design Institute as associate professor of landscape architecture and director of the GIS lab. Brooks, who has been with Clemson University since 1988, earned a Ph.D in urban design and planning from the University of Washington.
Don Epley was named the Victor L. Lyon, CCIM Distinguished Professor of real estate. A member of the WSU Pullman faculty, Epley holds both Certified Commercial Investment Member and member of the Appraisal Institute designations.
Roy Harrington joined WIMIRT as program director of the Safe Start Initiative and senior research associate. Harrington most recently was regional administrator of the state Department of Social and Health Service’s Division of Children and Family Services.
Steven Hirsch was hired as an instructor in the school psychology certification program. He has been a school psychologist in the East Valley School District.
Ines Hoegl joined WSU Spokane as an instructor in academic affairs and a program coordinator in the business office.
Lawrence “Dale” Hokanson joined the Interdisciplinary Design Institute as an instructor in architecture and construction management. Hokanson, who earned a doctoral degree in civil engineering, has been an instructor in civil engineering with WSU Pullman and the University of Idaho. He worked for more than 30 years as a civil engineer with the Air Force.
Paul Schimpf was named an associate professor of computer engineering. Schimpf, who previously taught at Eastern Washington University, was a senior principal engineer at Raytheon and is the owner of The Human Interface, a consulting firm. He received a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Washington.
Moving up:
Todd Woodard has been promoted to director of marketing and public relations for Spokane international Airport. His responsibilities have been expanded to include oversight of the Airport Business Park, a 600-acre industrial and office park development with a staff of five and annual operating budget of $1 million. Woodard, who began working for Spokane Airports in 1995, was previously the manager of marketing and public relations.
Telect Inc. has promoted the following employees:
Hossein Nikdel was named director of information systems and technology. Nikdel will be responsible for all of Telect’s global information technology requirements.
Lloyd Lohf was promoted to director of mechanical engineering. He will provide vision and direction to a newly reorganized mechanical engineering department. He will also help to develop telecommunications products and technology and provide support to Telect’s global operations.
Tom Watkins was named director of engineering. He will manage the new product development process to improve time to market and to provide Telect with the data necessary for research and development investments.
James Zipperer was promoted to production engineering manager. Zipperer will plan, direct and coordinate Telect’s manufacturing processes.
Jody Thulon was promoted to production manager. Thulon will provide direction, motivation and assistance to all production personnel by monitoring all department operations and employee performance.
Starting up:
Pullman-based Neill Motors has established a new U-Save Auto Rental franchise at 604 Bridge Street in Clarkston, Wash. The new franchise will have a fleet of 20 cars and will be open by the end of summer. Auto dealer Tom Neill has operated a U-Save franchise in Pullman for 11 years.
Kudos Sales associates and staff of Windermere Real Estate’s Spokane Group, along with the Windermere Foundation, have donated $13,000 to the Spokane Neighborhood Action Program, which provides assistance to homeless families and victims of domestic violence. The donation will help pay for a van to transport -sometimes in emergency situations -individuals, families and their possessions. Windermere’s Spokane Group includes its Valley, North Wall street, Manito, Leroy Johnson and Relocation offices.
The Spokane Chapter of Executive Women International has awarded scholarships to the following high school juniors:
Sheena Chestnut, Ferris High School, $3,000; Sara Boyd, North Central, $1,500. Wonkermie Flumo, Lewis and Clark, $1,000. The organization also announced winners of its 2000 Adult Student in Scholastic Transition program. Each winner received $500 and attended Eastern Washington University: Teri Herold, government major; Crystal Miller, dental hygiene; Susan MaClane, social work; and Julie Murphy, sociology.
Lithia Camp employee Paul VanDoren has been named a Vista Award winner for the third time in his career. The award is given to the finest Volvo service personnel. To earn the award, candidates must achieve a 90 percent average on four Vista written tests. They must also be rated a master technician. The 48 who scored highest in a semi-final at their own place of business were invited to compete in the finals at North American Volvo headquarters in Rockleigh, N.J. The 18 winners, including VanDoren, represent the top 1 percent of all registered Volvo technicians.
