Arbitration Process Begins For Kaiser
With no public comment about specific issues, arbitration began Monday to settle unresolved contract issues between Kaiser Aluminum and the United Steelworkers.
The week of meetings in Chicago begins the final steps in a process to end the labor dispute that has left 2,900 Kaiser Steelworkers off the job for 23 months.
A five-member arbitration panel is hearing from both company and union representatives who will argue why the panel should choose their sides of issues on which the two parties couldn’t agree.
One change has been made to the five-member panel. The union’s representation now includes Richard Davis, vice president of administration for the USWA, instead of Robert Bratulich, an officer for the union’s District 11. No reason was given for the change. The panel is headed by professional arbitrator Seymour Strongin, of Washington, D.C.
Arbitration hearings are scheduled to continue through Friday. Then Strongin is expected to decide the final contract within 21 days.
