Id Request Leads To Checkbook Recovery
The checkbook of a man who died two years ago was recovered Saturday when a Nordstrom salesperson asked for identification from a man trying to pass a check in the store.
The suspect tried to purchase a pair of shoes with the check but left about 4 p.m. when the salesperson asked for a photo identification.
He left the check behind.
Police said the employee called the phone number on the check and spoke to a woman who said her house had been burglarized the previous day. She said her late husband’s checkbook was among the items taken.
The man was tracked to the STA Plaza, where police questioned him.
He was identified as Neil Michael Giroux, who gave his address as 1934 N. Center.
Police said Giroux is suspected of passing the same fraudulent checks at two other stores and had the merchandise, and the checkbook, with him.
Giroux was booked on four felony counts of forgery. Police said he has 21 convictions as an adult, including theft, forgery and possession of a controlled substance.
