Adams County

Othello

County commissioners will spend $31,900 from a special fund to build a walking path around Taggares Park. The path will be 8 feet wide around the 20-acre park. The land was donated by the late Pete Taggares, a big supporter of community projects.

Ferry County

The annual community Sidewalk Sale is at 9 a.m. today and runs all day. It is sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. In addition to the sale, the Tech Center is holding an open house today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Grant County

Soap Lake

The city is taking the need for improvements one street at a time, working now near Elder Street Park. The City Council approved the town’s six-year street plan and is applying for state and federal grants to help where local taxes fall short.

Lincoln County

Not only are the County Fair exhibits fun, but fair-goers will enjoy the rodeo, special entertainment, food booths and craft vendors. The gates open at 6 a.m. and close well after 11 p.m.

Pend Oreille County

Newport

Fall schedules are out for the Newport College Center. Part of the Institute for Extended Learning at the Community Colleges of Spokane, the center offers career track and general education courses. Register from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The center closes at 4:30 p.m. on Fridays. Bonner County residents can sign up for classes and pay in-state tuition if there are vacancies.

The Friends of Lincoln Park is putting on a 90-minute free concert by the Spokane Symphony in the northern lawn area of the park along 17th Avenue on Sept. 6 at 6 p.m. The group is trying to draw attention to the beauty of the park and its place in the community.

The “College Without Walls” program is put on by Christian Life School of Theology International (CLST), which has opened a Colville campus. The school provides accredited education for local churches. Call 509-684-6567.

The city fire department is looking for firefighting volunteers. Usually peak fire time is in early September, but an unusually dry summer has moved that date up. The county has gone close to 50 days without rain.

Plummer

Remodeling on City Hall’s front offices will start in early September. Wiring will be upgraded to accommodate computer systems and the offices modernized. Visitors should use the side door. Work should be completed by the end of September. This is the final phase of work started two years ago when the building was enlarged. Funding for the project was set aside 10 years ago.

The 21st annual Art Manley Huckleberry Social offers all-you-can-eat desserts and live music from 7-9 p.m. Monday at the Lake City Senior Center. The event features huckleberry pies, ice cream, cakes and more. Berries and desserts will be auctioned also. The social was started by Manley and is a fund-raiser for the Kootenai County Democratic Party.

Susan Seaman will be full-time director of Renaissance Charter School. Her experience ranges from teaching kindergarten to graduate level. She has received many awards and holds a doctorate in education from the University of Idaho.

Shoshone County

Kellogg

The county draft flood mitigation plan is available for review at all local libraries. It’s also at the County Courthouse Public Works office, Calder Post Office, the Spragpole in Murray, the Peoples Action Coalition office and Babin’s Grocery Store in Prichard. A meeting to comment on the plan will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Sunnyside Elementary in Kellogg.

Local photographers Gordon and Cathie Sullivan have produced a book: “Beautiful America’s Montana.” Two photos were taken in Lincoln County: a scene at Wanless Lake and a shot of Bull River. The Sullivans have produced several calendars and are working on two books. The items are at Cabinet Books and Music.
