Obituaries

Eugene Carpenter Newport, Wash.

Service for Eugene Roy Carpenter, 77, will be at 1 p.m. today at Sherman- Knapp Funeral Home in Newport. Burial will follow at the Newport Cemetery.

Mr. Carpenter, who was born in Tekoa, Wash., died Friday.

He graduated in 1941 from North Central High School.

Mr. Carpenter served in the Army as a technical sergeant in the AsiaticPacific Theater during World War II.

In 1946 he married Alice Krokom. They moved to Newport in 1959.

He worked as an agent and telegrapher with the Great Northern Railway and Burlington Northern Railroad for more than 40 years. He retired in 1984.

Mr. Carpenter was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

His wife died in 1969.

Survivors include two daughters, Virginia Hill of Richland and Kris Hersley of Boise; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Louise Pauly Chewelah

Graveside service for Louise Mai Pauly, 71, will be at 11 a.m. today at Chewelah Memorial Park.

Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Chewelah is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Pauly, who was born in Zap, N.D., died Saturday.

In 1947 she marred Ted Mai. They moved to Chewelah in 1957. He died in 1969.

Mrs. Pauly worked as a waitress at the Chalet, Tom’s Cafe, the Round Up and the Yale Hotel, all in Chewelah.

In 1976 she married Louis Pauly.

During the late 1970s she worked as a cook for the Chewelah School District. She retired in 1989.

Mrs. Pauly was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Chewelah.

Her husband died in 1978.

Survivors include two sons, Kevin Mai of Spokane and Colin Mai of Chewelah; a daughter, Edie Mai of Spokane; three sisters, Melida Kuk of Spokane, and Lorraine Razler and Emma Roth, both of Bismarck, N.D.; and seven grandchildren.

Wayne Nichols Spokane

Memorial service for Wayne A. Nichols, 83, will be at 11 a.m. today at Unity Church of Truth. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

A 51-year Spokane resident, Mr. Nichols died Friday. He was born near Fort Benton, Mont.

He graduated from Geraldine (Mont.) High School in 1937.

Mr. Nichols worked for Buchanan Chevrolet before opening Nichols Bros. Auto Body Repair Shop with his brother, Archie, in 1963. He retired in 1980.

His wife of 54 years, Elizabeth, died in 1994.

Survivors include two daughters, Veronica Nichols of Spokane and Vicki Nichols Lane of Sumner, Wash.; a son, Jay Nichols of Spokane; a brother, Dale Nichols of Spokane; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Helen (Mewhinney) Corum Spokane

Memorial service for Helen Elaine (Mewhinney) Corum, 69, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Opportunity Presbyterian Church. The Neptune Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Corum, who was born in Okanogan, Wash., died Thursday.

She graduated from Tonasket (Wash.) High School, Kinman Business College and Whitworth College.

In 1951 she married Loren Corum, and they lived in Spokane.

Mrs. Corum taught third grade at Northwest Christian Schools for 20 years.

In 1990 She and her husband retired to Cannon Beach, Ore. They returned to Spokane in 1997.

Mrs. Corum was a member of Cannon Beach Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her husband; three sons, Daniel Corum of Tacoma, and Casey and Aaron Corum, both of Oregon; a daughter, Debbi Bersagel of the Spokane Valley; two brothers, Ken Mewhinney of Spokane and Glen Mewhinney of Texas; a sister, Jeanne Mitchell of Bellingham; and seven grandchildren.

Dorothy Neely Greenacres

Graveside service for Dorothy M. Neely, 74, will be at 2 p.m. today at Pines Cemetery. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in North Dakota, Mrs. Neely died Friday.

She was a 50-year Spokane-area resident. Mrs. Neely was a homemaker and a member of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.

Her husband Benjamin died in 1984.

Survivors include a son, Ben Neely of Greenacres; three sisters, Grace Bussolli and Evelyn Underwood, both of Cle Elum, Wash., and La Tisha Gapen of Sequim, Wash.; three brothers, Sam Scott of Cle Elum, Virgal Scott of Lynnwood, Wash., and Arthur Scott of Columbus, Ohio; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Marvin Macy Spokane

Visitation for Marvin E. Macy, 67, will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Service is planned for 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Mr. Macy, who was born in Ellington, Mo., died Saturday.

He graduated from high school in Ellington.

In 1952 he joined the Air Force. He served in France, England and Vietnam.

Mr. Macy moved to Spokane in 1973 and was discharged from the military in 1974.

He went to work as a bus driver for the Spokane Transit Authority in 1978. He retired in 1998.

Mr. Macy was a volunteer for the Spokane Food Bank.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Therese; three daughters, Barbara Johnson of Spokane, Karen Schultz of Calgary, Alberta, and Alice Wasnidge of Airdrie, Alberta; a son, Steven Macy of Valley, Wash.; his mother, Bertha Macy of Marysville, Wash.; four brothers, James Macy of Salida, Calif., Earl and Ray Macy, both of Marysville, and Dennis Macy of Lynden, Wash.; two sisters, Nita Peterson of Lynnwood, Wash., and Mae Olsen of Marysville; and 10 grandchildren.

Katherine Laupp Davenport, Wash.

No service will be held for Katherine M. Laupp, 91, at her request. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Laupp, who was born in Mondovi, Wash., died Saturday.

She graduated from North Central High School and Kinman Business University.

Miss Laupp worked as a secretary in Washington, D.C., for the Veterans Administration for one year, and for the Soil Conservation Service mapping department for 29 years. She retired in 1967 and returned to Spokane.

She had been living at Riverview Assisted Living since 1984 and recently moved to Davenport.

Miss Laupp was a member of the Audubon Society.

She is survived by two sisters, Louise Johnson and Gertrude McClure, both of Davenport.

James Dewey Princeton, Idaho

Memorial service for James E. Dewey, 71, will be held today at 1 p.m. at the Freeze Church north of Potlatch, Idaho. Private inurnment will be held at Freeze Cemetery at a later date. Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow, Idaho, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Dewey, who was born in Coudersport, Pa., died Saturday.

He graduated in 1947 from high school in Coudersport and had served as captain of the football team and was active in drama and yearbook.

Mr. Dewey later graduated with a bachelor’s degree in forestry from Pennsylvania State University.

He worked for the Department of Forests and Waters as a timber sales supervisor before serving as a smokejumper in Missoula in 1952.

In 1953 Mr. Dewey went to work for the Forest Service in the Priest Lake District of the Kaniksu National Forest. He worked for the Forest Service in various parts of Idaho and Montana, including the Nez Perce National Forest and the Clearwater National Forest, before retiring after 32 years. After leaving the Forest Service, he worked as a consulting forester for Hash Tree Co. of Princeton for many years.

Mr. Dewey married Netta Duell in 1953. The couple later divorced.

He married Helen Gardner in 1974.

Mr. Dewey enjoyed hiking, camping and outdoor recreation and raised border collies.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Rita Bottger of Moscow, Deborah Aspelund and Carla Helt, both of Lewiston, and Leah Bentley of Grangeville, Idaho; a stepdaughter, Carol Pittmann, and three stepsons, John, Larry and Gordon Gardner Jr., all of Oakesdale, Wash.; two brothers, Robert and Thomas Dewey, both of Pennsylvania; a sister, Anne Hart of Texas; 13 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Clarence `Guy’ McComas Spokane

Service for Clarence “Guy” McComas, 88, is planned for 3 p.m. Wednesday at Unity Church of Truth. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Farmington, Calif., Mr. McComas died Friday.

He was a 50-year Spokane resident and worked at Kaiser Aluminum.

His wife, Shirley, died in 1998.

Survivors include a son, Floyd McComas of Spokane; three brothers, Glen McComas of Colville, Wash., Roy McComas of Everett and Gordon McComas of Eugene, Ore.; and a sister, Mildred Dorington of Helena.

Verlan `Vern’ Cowin Spokane

Service for Verlan Thomas “Vern” Cowin, 88, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Park.

A 63-year Spokane resident, Mr. Cowin died Thursday. He was born in Leeds, N.D.

He worked for Columbia Electric for 26 years. He also worked in real estate for 10 years.

Mr. Cowin was a member of the Moose and Eagles lodges. He also was a member of bowling leagues in Spokane.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Margaret; a daughter, Carol Anderson of Sammamish, Wash.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Names.

Lillian `Sue’ Lynch Spokane

Memorial service for Lillian “Sue” Lynch, 58, was Monday at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Colbert. Mrs. Lynch, who died Thursday, was born in Tama, Iowa.

She was a 27-year Spokane resident and a homemaker.

Mrs. Lynch was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband of 35 years, Jack; a daughter, Christi James of Chattaroy; a son, Patrick Lynch of Seattle; two brothers, Doug and William Loftus, both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a sister, Mary Jo Bedford of Santa Rosa, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Richard Boor Spokane

A memorial gathering for Richard Garry Boor, 65, was Saturday at the family home.

A 54-year Spokane resident, Mr. Boor died last Tuesday. He was born in Medford, Wis.

He was a self-employed contractor, and was a member of the Eagles Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Arleen; two sons, Anthony Boor of Spokane and Daniel Boor of Las Vegas; a daughter, Kathryn Phillips of Albuquerque, N.M.; two sisters, Nancy Bleker of Centralia, Wash., and Ethel Mitchell of Yuma, Ariz.; two brothers, James Boor of Spokane and John Boor of Rochester, Wash.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Russel Van Wagoner Spokane

No service will be held for Russel Van Wagoner, 93, at his request. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Van Wagoner, who died Wednesday, was born in Virginia, and raised in Canada.

He was a sheetmetal worker for various companies and retired in 1969. He was a member of the Sheetmetal Workers Union Local 16 for 50 years.

He moved to Spokane in 1986 from Mesa, Ariz.

Mr. Van Wagoner was a member of the Veradale congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He was one of the first presiding overseers of the Astoria, Ore., Jehovah’s Witness congregation in the 1940s.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Gloria; and two sons, Allen Van Wagoner of Spokane and Michael Bearman of Beaverton, Ore.
