Second Hotel Planned Close To Valley Mall

A second hotel is set to join the lineup of new businesses near the Spokane Valley Mall.

A Louisiana-based company plans to build a Residence Inn by Marriott east of Sullivan Road and north of Indiana Avenue.

Bob Bennie, project manager of Vandervert Construction, said crews will break ground on the $4.2 million extended-stay hotel as soon as plans are approved by Spokane County.

“I hope we’ll be able to start construction in about a month and a half,” Bennie said.

If winter weather cooperates, the Residence Inn would be finished by May or June of 2001.

Dewey Weaver, of Inter-Mountain Management, said the 84-suite hotel will cater to clients who plan longer stays. Inter-Mountain will own the hotel. It is the first Residence Inn in the Spokane area.

Each suite will have a kitchenette, living room, bedroom and bath. The rooms will be wired for high-speed Internet. An indoor pool, spa, fitness room, and outdoor tennis and basketball courts are also planned.

Bikes will also be available for those who want to ride on the nearby Centennial Trail.

Weaver said the Residence Inn serves dinner four nights a week and guests will be able to pick fresh vegetables from the hotel’s garden.

The new hotel expects to draw customers from the businesses developing along Indiana Avenue near the Valley Mall, as well as others traveling on Interstate 90.

“Your area does not have an upper-end extended-stay facility,” he said.

Weaver’s company also owns nine other hotels, and has seven more under construction.

The Residence Inn is the second hotel planned for Indiana Avenue. A 127-room Oxford Suites hotel is being built west of Sullivan Road.
