The big question is, when is Stella, Schweitzer’s six-person, super-fast chairlift equipped with visual effects opening? The answer: When there’s more snow.
But for now, two lifts are operating at the Sandpoint resort - Musical Chairs and Chair No. 1 to Midway. More could open by the weekend. The cross country trails are open, and all gathering places are ready for business.

Mount Spokane Ski and Snowboard Park’s season kicks off today. Chair lifts Nos. 2, 3 and 5 are open. No. 4 will be added on Saturday. The ski/snowboard school will be in full swing with classes beginning at various times during the day. A special series of adult Saturday workshops will begin Dec. 9. Frosty the Snowman would feel at home at Lookout Mountain this weekend as the resort stages its Wallace Winter Carnival Snowman Contest. Bring the family and build a masterpiece. Prizes will be awarded.
Lookout is running at 75 percent operation and anticipates 100 percent by the weekend. The mountain is open Thursdays through Sundays and all holidays. Every Thursday is a 2-for-1 day on which two people can ski or ride for $10 each. (Not offered weeks of Dec. 21 and Dec 28.)
New this year is a second Terrain Park in addition to Claim Jumper Terrain Park, which has nine launches as big a dump trucks and the nation’s longest quarter-pipe at 1,111 feet. Visit Web site at www.skilookout.com.
Silver Mountain opens Saturday with chair Nos. 1, 2 and 5 (and possibly 3) operating. Twelve runs will be open. Silver plans to resume its regular operating schedule on Wednesday. The ski area normally is closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
