Fresh off its first State B trophy, Valley Christian appears primed for bigger things.
Carli Smith scored 38 points Friday night as the Panthers opened their season with a 70-27 non-league win at Class 2A Riverside.
Smith finished 16 of 21 from the field and 6 of 9 from the free-throw line. The junior has already eclipsed 850 career points.
VC placed seventh at last year’s state tournament. Riverside tied for the Great Northern League title, but lost many players to graduation and transfer.
VC defeated Riverside 33-30 to open last year.
