Learn the facts. Teens are invited to a Peer Education Youth Rally from 5:30 to 9 p.m. today at the Spokane Community College Lair auditorium. The free rally will feature performances by teen groups that raise awareness of issues such as sexual assault, tobacco use, suicide, drug and alcohol use, abstinence, HIV/AIDS and many others. Organizers also will launch a contest where students choose the issue they feel affects their school the most and raise awareness through a media campaign at that school. The top prize for the contest is $500. There will be a resource fair with booths from community organizations and free food and raffle prizes. The rally is sponsored by the March of Dimes.

If you want to win, you better hurry. Tuesday is the deadline for teenagers interested in winning a free trip to Germany through this year’s Young Columbus Essay Contest. Students age 12 to 18 who live in The Spokesman-Review’s home delivery circulation area are eligible to enter. Complete entry forms are available by calling (509) 459-5071 or (800) 338-8801, ext. 5071.

Here’s a chance to return the favor. Students in kindergarten through 12th grade can nominate their favorite teachers for the Eastern Washington University Teacher of the Month award.

Students must write a nominating letter explaining why their teacher has made a difference in their lives.

Letters should include the teacher’s name, school and the grade they teach, as well as the nominating student’s name and address, grade in school and the school’s name and address.
