Ccs Faculty Members Honored With Grants

The following Community Colleges of Spokane faculty members were honored with 2000 Exceptional Faculty Awards and received $500 grants:

Spokane Community College

Mary Lou Hammond, mathematics instructor; Mike Mires, business computer systems instructor; Kamilia Nemri, mathematics instructor; John Norman, fluid power instructor; Becky Scheid, surgical technology instructor; Debbie Smith, computer support instructor; and Beverly Walker-Griffea, counselor, SCC Student Services.

Spokane Falls Community College

Gwen Eltz, office Technology instructor; Jerry Jose, Spanish instructor; Loren Pemberton, counselor, SFCC Student Services; Bob Schroeder, librarian, SFCC Library; Barbara Williamson, English instructor; and Vance Youmans, history instructor.

Institute for Extended Learning

Pam Baldwin, women’s programs/ life skills instructor; Carol Mundy, developmental education instructor; Denise Osei, multicultural specialist, IEL Student Services; and Cynthia Vigil, counselor, IEL Student Services.

Air Force Maj. Wallace R.G. Langbehn II of Lorton, Va., was promoted on June 1 to the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Langbehn is the son of Wallace Langbehn, Spokane, and a 1981 graduate of Gonzaga University. He is stationed at the Pentagon and is director, Theater Battle Arena; chief, Analysis Development Branch; and chief, Modeling and Simulation Branch.

Shirley Boes has received the North Spokane Exchange Club’s annual Golden Deeds Award. This award is given yearly to persons who consistently volunteer in the community to help others.

Boes volunteers 20 to 40 hours per week within the Department of Social and Health Services coordinating 35 volunteer drivers who transport foster kids and other children to various appointments for visitations, school, daycare, doctors, etc. During the holiday season, she puts in even more hours helping provide gifts of new clothes and toys to hundreds of the children served.

Michele James, Spokane, was awarded a Daniel Coe Scholarship to attend Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

James is the daughter of Heather Taylor-Jones and a 2000 graduate of Rogers High School.

Craig A. Morgenstern, Spokane, has earned a doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University. He will complete a medical internship at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton at Camp Pendleton, Calif., and plans to serve as an anesthesiologist for the Navy.

Morgenstern is the son of Milt and Lyla Morgenstern, Spokane, and is a 1987 graduate of Ferris High School. He received a bachelor of arts degree from Eastern Washington University in 1991 and a bachelor of science degree from Washington State University in 1994.
