Mt. Spokane Practices Dismantling Shadle
GSL boys
Practice doesn’t make perfect. If it did, the Mt. Spokane boys basketball team wouldn’t be 2-0.
The Wildcats lit up visiting Shadle Park in the second half to roll to a 70-42 win Tuesday night in the first Greater Spokane League game for the Highlanders.
“We had two crummy days of practice,” Mt. Spokane coach Bill Ayers said. “I told them to realize they had two bad practices but they had 19 good ones before that. Two bad practices wasn’t going to outweigh the good. You know what to do.”
What they did was hit 17 of 26 shots in the second half to turn a 29-21 lead into a rout. They also had a huge edge in rebounding and displayed great balance with four starters in double figures - and that didn’t include top returning scorer Kyle Vessey, who had eight points and a game-high nine rebounds.
“Everybody on this team can score,” senior wing Casey Franklin said. “Depending on the situation, somebody is going to step up.”
It started with 6-foot-9 sophomore Zach Proett, who had six of his career-high 15 in the opening minutes. Then it was Ferris transfer Jordan Bursch, who had nine of his game-high 16 in the second quarter. He added six assists.
Then it was Franklin and sophomore Joel Clark, who combined for 19 of their 21 points in the second half.
“They’ve got an inside game, they’ve got guards who can pass the ball and they can shoot,” Shadle Park coach Darcy Weisner said. “You can tell they played a game and we haven’t. They having timing and rhythm.”
Mt. Spokane broke the game open with an 11-0 run to open the second half, starting with the 6-3 Franklin’s offensive rebound basket. Proett made a free throw and then scored on a feed from Franklin. Vessey followed with a drive to the basket and then Bursch hit a short banker and a steal for a layup.
Shadle had five turnovers and four misses before Brett Weisner’s 3-pointer from the left corner ended the drought. However, Franklin answered with a 15-foot jumper and a three-point play after being held scoreless in the first half.
