Wv Repels Post Falls

Sam Cameron Correspondent

Jeff Ohman scored six straight points to end the game and a Post Falls rally Tuesday night as the West Valley Eagles defeated the Trojans 64-47 in Border League boys basketball action, despite 18 points and 11 rebounds from Issac Barnhardt of Post Falls.

Neither team lit it up from the floor, with both shooting around 30 percent, but a strong man-to-man press gave the Eagles the win.

“I’m really happy with our defense,” West Valley coach Jaimie Nilles said. “We tried to get them into bad spots on the floor and get turnovers when they reversed the ball.”

It worked. Along with four WV steals, Post Falls turned the ball over 18 times.

“We’re as good as anybody from the neck down,” PF coach Dave Stockwell said. “With our new system, we’re just not putting the part above the neck together yet.”

West Valley (2-0, 1-0) opened the game with a 16-5 run. Jordan Allen dominated, getting four offensive rebounds and put-backs.

Post Falls (0-3, 0-3) scored the last five points of the quarter to close within 16-10.

West Valley got seven straight points from post player B.J. Harris to open the second quarter.

Held to just four points in the quarter, Post Falls went to the locker room trailing 27-14.

West Valley again came out hot to start the second half, getting consecutive 3-pointers from Craig McIntyre and Lance Pecht, who assisted one another on the buckets. Post Falls wouldn’t let up, however, as Barnhardt grabbed four balls off the offensive glass and put them in for points, along with a 3 from Scott Jackson.

“We got rid of the jitters in the third quarter,” Barnhardt said. “We started to put things together.”

Pecht, who finished with 16 despite an off shooting night, hit again to end the third quarter giving WV a 47-28 lead.

Post Falls played the defense in the final quarter, getting three steals and forcing three turnovers during a 12-1 run, pulling them to within eight.

But they would get no closer. Pecht hit a 3, stunting the Trojans’ momentum and putting the Eagles in control.

Forced to foul with 3 minutes in the game, McIntyre and guard Kyle Gazaway hit five free throws to set up Ohman’s final flurry.

“We’re only playing two quarters right now,” Stockwell said. “We’re trying to get to where we play four. Hopefully that will come soon.”

Besides struggling from the floor, the teams did not shoot well from the line, but neither coach was too concerned, pointing out that the season is young.

“We’re not really happy,” Nilles said, “because we had a let down at the end, but we’ll take the win.”
