Whits Win Nwc Opener

Melody Mathews scored a career-high 22 points Wednesday to guide Whitworth to a 73-50 win over visiting Whitman in a Northwest Conference season opener.

Mathews hit 8 of 9 field goals and 4 of 5 free throws. Whitworth starters shot 55 percent from the field.

Whitworth built a 22-13 lead with a 16-0 run fueled by five points apiece from Erica Ewart and Kelly Middlesworth. The Pirates also had a 10-0 run in the first half.

The Pirates extended their edge to 51-29 with 12:48 left. Whitman answered with a 19-5 run over the next 8 minutes, but Whitworth closed the game with a 17-2 run.

Emily Stewart led Whitman, hitting 8 of 13 field goals to score 19, and adding a game-high 11 rebounds.
