Spokane Painters’ Work In Two Seattle Art Galleries

Compiled By Kandis Carper

Two prominent Spokane painters have their work on display in Seattle art galleries in exhibits that opened Thursday.

Lanny DeVuono is showing her recent small landscapes at the Esther Claypool Gallery, 617 Western.

Dean Eliasen displays his latest acrylic paintings at the Bryan Ohno Gallery, 155 S. Main in Pioneer Square. Both shows run through Dec. 30.

DeVuono’s oil paintings depict rural scenes from the Inland Northwest with a cerebral edge. DeVuono, chair of Eastern Washington University’s art department, says her landscapes serve as “metaphors for complex human experiences and our proprietary predilection toward nature, toward each other and toward art.”

Eliasen’s latest acrylic paintings reflect a geometric abstract universe of orbital motion. His current show features his newest techniques, involving iridescent and pearlescent acrylics. Iridescent paints add shimmer and depth while pearlescent paints have the smooth, creamy sheen of pearls with subtle pigment.

DeVuono and Eliasen are represented locally by the Lorinda Knight Gallery, 523 W. Sprague. Eliasen is scheduled for a show at the gallery in April.

Artists sought

The Moses Lake Museum and Art Center is seeking artists for the Eighth Annual Baked, Mashed Or Fried Exhibition, running Jan. 26 through Feb. 17.

The exhibition is a celebration of the Columbia Basin’s No. 1 crop, the potato. This annual exhibit, which has received national and international print, radio and television coverage, celebrates the starchy vegetable in various art forms ranging from photography to ceramics.

Museum officials encourage artists to creatively interpret the theme. The potato could be the subject or the medium; people, places and/or things associated with the potato industry could be the inspiration.

This year’s show will be juried and will offer cash prizes totaling $800, along with purchase awards of more than $1,500.

Artists must live in Washington to enter. Entry deadline is Jan. 2. For entry forms and additional information, write to the Moses Lake Museum and Art Center, 122 W. Third Ave., Moses Lake, WA 98837; or call (509) 766-9395.

Spokane Civic Theatre will hold auditions for “An American Daughter” on Monday at 7 p.m. in the Firth J. Chew Studio Theatre.

This political comedy by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Wendy Wasserstein is the fourth production in the Reading Stage’s “Vox Populi” (Voice of the People), a series of plays dedicated to the political process.

The performance date is Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. in the Studio Theatre, in the basement of the Civic Theater at 1020 N. Howard. Tickets are $5. For more information call 325-1413.
