Area Students Awarded Scholarships

The following Eastern Washington University students received scholarships for the 2000-2001 school year:

Danica Ducrest and Beatrice Marr, both of Spokane, have been awarded Alumni Advisory Board Dean’s Leadership Endowed Scholarships by the College of Business and Public Administration. Each year two students, one full-time and one part-time, with declared majors in the College of Business and Public Administration, are chosen for these scholarships based upon academic achievement, leadership and community service.

Ducrest, a full-time student majoring in management information systems has maintained a 3.7 grade-point average and has been accepted into Beta Gamma Sigma, a business student honor society. She has been elected president of the Students in Free Enterprise Club at Eastern and was nominated for Volunteer of the Year by Junior Achievement for her involvement at Hamblen Elementary School.

Marr, a part-time student earning her second bachelor’s degree, in management information systems, is a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Beta Gamma Sigma honor societies. She is currently a human resources manager for Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest and volunteers at Ogden Hall for Women and Children.

Jamie Schrack, Fruitland, Wash., has been awarded a $1,250 Arnie Carlson Memorial Scholarship.

Schrack is the daughter of James and Nancy Schrack, Fruitland, and is a 1997 graduate of Columbia High School in Hunters, Wash. She is a senior at Eastern and was named to the dean’s list for fall and winter quarters.

Celeste Allen of Wellpinit, Wash. has been selected to receive a $2,000 Indian Education Program Presidential Scholarship for the 2000-2001 school year at Eastern Washington University. She was chosen based upon her academic accomplishments.

Allen graduated with honors from Wellpinit High School in 1998. She is the daughter of Mary Abrahamson of Wellpinit, and Richard Allen of Plummer, Idaho.

Christina Fairbairn of Metaline Falls, Wash., has been awarded a $2,500 Academic Honors Scholarship for academic accomplishments in high school.

Fairbairn graduated from Selkirk High School this spring and will be a freshman at Eastern in the fall. She is the daughter of Keith and Patricia Fairbairn, Metaline Falls.

Cody Carlson, Metaline Falls, Wash., has been awarded a $1,500 Dean’s Scholarship for academic excellence.

Carlson is a recent graduate of Selkirk High School and is the son of Kim and Stephanie Carlson, Metaline Falls. He plans to major in education at Eastern.

Kathryn Cabbage received a $550 Claude and Catherine Simpson Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to outstanding juniors or seniors majoring in an education-related field.

Cabbage graduated from East Valley High School in 1998 and is majoring in communication disorders. She is also involved in Eastern’s University Honors Program. She is the daughter of Patrick and Beverly Cabbage, Spokane.

Eva Jordan was awarded a $1,250 Pemco Education scholarship.

Jordan is a 1999 graduate of Central Valley High School and is a sophomore at Eastern majoring in secondary English education. She is a youth leader at Impact Student Ministries and is involved with the Living Word Christian Center. She is the daughter of Les and Dori Jordan, Spokane.

Caitlin Mahnke was awarded a $1,500 Dean’s Scholarship for academic excellence.

Mahnke is a recent graduate of Central Valley High School and plans to major in biology at Eastern. She is the daughter of David and Colleen Mahnke, Liberty Lake.

Christina Mertens received a $1,500 Dean’s Scholarship.

Mertens is a recent graduate of University High School. She is the daughter of Jerry and Judy Mertens, Spokane.

Daniel Werr received a $3,000 Eastern Academic Honors/National Merit Scholarship for academic achievement.

Werr is a 1997 graduate of University High School and is a junior majoring in geography at Eastern. He is the son of Martin and Deborah Werr, Spokane.

John Straub has been awarded a $1,500 Recognition Scholarship by the College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University in St. Joseph, Minn., for the 2000-2001 academic year. The Recognition Scholarship is a four-year renewable scholarship awarded to students with strong academic potential.

Straub, a first-year student at SJU, is the son of William and Cheryl Straub, Spokane.

Cory Rux of Wilbur, Wash. was recently commissioned as a second lieutenant by the Army in a ceremony at Eastern Washington University.

Rux is a 1996 Wilbur High School graduate and graduated in June from Eastern Washington University with a bachelor’s degree in computer science. He is the son of Trudy and Butch Rux, Wilbur.
