Snooze And Lose

Colville National Forest

Backcountry skiers who thought they could sleep in on Dec. 1 and still reserve a winter night in the Snow Peak cabin were sadly mistaken.

Reservation lines at the Republic Ranger District were jammed when they opened to take reservations at 7 a.m.

Every night in January, February and March was booked within 45 minutes, said Keith Wakefield, the Forest Service recreation ranger for the area.

The cabin sleeps up to eight people willing to ski or snowshoe into the area. Cost is $7.50 per person per night with a four-person minimum.
