Paul Luppert Retires From Coast Guard

Capt. Paul Daniel Luppert, Spokane, recently retired from the Coast Guard after nearly 32 years of service. His military awards include three Coast Guard Commendation Medals, two Navy Commendation Medals, four Coast Guard Achievement Medals, three Humanitarian Service Medals, Vietnam Service Medals and the Combat Action Ribbon.

He and his wife Susan are graduates of Lewis and Clark High School.

Eleven Spokane Country residents have been awarded the President’s scholarship to attend Western Washington University for the 2000-2001 school year. Recipients are listed with their parents’ names and amount of scholarship.

Joseph Sullivan, son of Dave and Mollie Sullivan, Spokane, $500; Erin Smead, daughter of Brian and Danita Smead, Spokane, $500; Adam Fogler, son of Debra Fogler, Cheney, $500; Makayia Gabel, daughter of Shawn and Theresa Gabel, Chattaroy, $500; Adam Johnson, son of Jim and Beverly Johnson, Spokane, $1,000; Chenine Johnson, daughter of Gary and Kathleen Johnson, Veradale, $1,000; Christopher Warner, son of Kim and Colleen Warner, Spokane, $1,000; Rebecca Stenersen, daughter of David and Bonnie Stenersen, Spokane, $2,000; Kimberly Glore, daughter of Steven and Kristine Glore, Spokane, $2,000; Ross Carper, son of Richard and Linda Carper, Spokane, $2,000; and Amanda Graves, daughter of John and Peggy Graves, Spokane, $2,500.

Benjamin Keith Greene, Spokane, has been awarded a Kalon Leaders Scholarship from Bethany College in Bethany, W.Va.

Greene is the son of Ronald Greene and Dianna Greene, both of Spokane. Greene graduated form Shadle Park High School.

Kyle O. Pfundheller has graduated from basic military training at the Navy Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Pfundheller is the son of Beverly Pfundheller, Spokane, and Brent Pfundheller, Pristina, Yugoslavia. He is a 1995 graduate of Shadle Park High School.

Two Spokane residents recently recently graduated from Barnard College in New York.

Catherine G. Slack graduated magna cum laude after majoring in English.

Slack, daughter of Roger and Dr. Corliss Slack, Spokane, is a graduate of Saint George’s School.

Billie L. Swift graduated cum laude after majoring in English.

Swift, daughter of Ned and Patrice Swift, Spokane, is a graduate of Saint George’s School.

Luke Bakken, Spokane, has graduated magna cum laude from the University of Rochester, N.Y., with a bachelor’s degree in computer science.

Bakken is a graduate of University High School.

Christian L. Hoenike, Spokane, received a master’s degree in special education from Central Washington University.

Hoenike received a bachelor’s degree from Gonzaga University in 1996.
