Gu Stuns Montana At Buzzer

College women’s basketball

Triana Allen’s rebound basket at the buz- zer capped Gonzaga’s 74-73 win over Monta- na Wednesday night, a frenzied comeback from 12 points down in the final minute and 24 seconds.

Jessica Malone had team highs of 26 points, nine rebounds and three assists before fouling out, leading GU in the non-conference game at Missoula.

Malone began the comeback with a 3-pointer with 1:01 left. After a steal by Allen, the Bulldogs added an Erin Bergman 3-pointer just 20 seconds later.

The Bulldogs then rebounded a missed free throw and fed Bergman for a layin and four-point deficit with 29 seconds left.

In the next 3 seconds, GU drew a foul, missed the free throw, but stole back the ball and drew another foul. Allen hit 1 of 2 from the line to get within 72-69.

Montana missed two free throws, allowing Malone to secure the rebound, head down court and hit a 3-pointer for a tie with 16 seconds left.

Malone apparently believed GU still trailed, because she fouled Montana’s Linda Cummings with 12 seconds to go. Cummings made the second of two free throws for a 73-72 lead.

Allen and Celeste Quitiquit missed field-goal attempts in the final 7 seconds, but Quitiquit’s miss bounced to Allen for her buzzer-beating 12-footer.

Shari Hill and Michelle Bortz combined for 25 points off the bench as the Titans left the Eagles winless at the Ala Moana Hotel Paradise Classic in Honolulu.

Jennifer Paluck scored a career-high 27, hitting 10 of 25 field goals, for the Eagles.

The Master’s College 76, Whitworth 45

Erin Buescher, a 6-foot-3 guard who transferred from UC Santa Barbara, totaled 13 points, nine rebounds and seven steals as the visiting Mustangs spanked the Pirates in a non-conference game.

The Mustangs, ranked 21st in the latest NAIA Division I poll, led 27-11 after 12 minutes.

Erica Ewart hit four 3-pointers and Mindy Bandy had nine rebounds for the Pirates, who have no starter taller than 5-10.
