Several Churches Plan Christmas Weekend Services

This weekend will likely be a flurry of activity for most area families. Many people will make space in their schedules to attend one of the Christmas worship services being held on the North side.

Many churches are hosting evening services on Sunday to celebrate Christmas Eve in addition to their regular morning worship times.

Here’s a look at holiday services:

* A Christmas Eve worship service will begin at 7 p.m. at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, 1926 W. Chelan. The service will have a Scottish theme, complete with bagpipes.

* County Homes Christian Church will put on a Christmas pageant during the 11 a.m. worship service Sunday. There will be a candlelight worship service at 10 p.m.

The church is located at 8415 N. Wall.

* St. David’s Episcopal Church is altering its normal worship schedule and only offering one 9 a.m. service on Sunday. It will be a Taize service, which will feature simple melodic songs, prayers, Scripture readings and silence.

A family Christmas Eve service will begin at 5 p.m. and a festive service will start at 11 p.m. Christmas Day will be celebrated with a 9 a.m. worship service Monday.

The church is located at 7315 N. Wall.

* Christmas Eve Mass will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, 545 E. Providence. Mass begins at 10 a.m. on Christmas Day.

* Mead United Methodist Church, 2515 E. Farwell Road, will have a candlelight worship service at 6 p.m. Sunday.

* A Christmas Eve candlelight worship service will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, 6905 N. Country Homes Blvd. Worship begins at 10:30 a.m. on Christmas Day.

The 8:30 and 11 a.m. worship services at the First Church of the Open Bible will feature a dramatized musical story of Christmas. The church is located at 8303 N. Division.

Members of the church are also planning to stage a living Nativity scene over the next few evenings in Franklin Park. They will be at the corner of Division and Queen from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Friday and Saturday.

* A family Christmas Eve candlelight worship service will begin at 8 p.m. Sunday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 4620 N. Regal.

* Northwood Presbyterian Church, 6721 N. Monroe, will host a candlelight Christmas Eve service at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

The 7 p.m. Christmas Eve family service Sunday at Green Bluff Community United Methodist Church will feature songs and a reading of the Christmas story. Members of the church will stage a living Nativity scene outside the church following the service.

The Nativity will also be put on outside the church from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The church is located at 9908 E. Green Bluff Road.

* Christmas Eve worship services begin at 7 and 10 p.m. Sunday at Messiah Lutheran Church, 4202 N. Belt. A Christmas Day service will begin at 10 a.m.

* Royal Hours for the Nativity will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1703 N. Washington. A Great Vespers for the Nativity will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Orthros begins at 9 a.m. on Christmas Day, followed by the liturgy at 10 a.m.

* Prince of Peace Lutheran Church will host one combined worship service at 10 a.m. Sunday. Additional Christmas Eve services will begin at 6, 8 and 11 p.m. Sunday. Christmas Day will be celebrated with a worship service at 10 a.m.

The church is located at 8441 N. Indian Trail Road.

* The choir of Lidgerwood Presbyterian Church will present the Christmas cantata “Joseph, the Carpenter” during the 10:30 a.m. worship service Sunday. A Christmas Eve candlelight service will begin at 7 p.m.

The church is located at 4449 N. Nevada.

* The annual Christmas Eve candlelight worship service at Open Door United Church of Christ will begin at 11 p.m. Sunday. The church is located at 205 N. Main in Deer Park.

The children’s choir will perform during the 6 p.m. Christmas Eve worship service at Audubon Park United Methodist Church, 3908 N. Driscoll Blvd. An candlelight worship service will begin at 11 p.m. Sunday.

* A candlelight Christmas Eve service will begin at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Grace Baptist Church, 1523 W. Mallon.

* Our Savior’s Lutheran Church will host a Christmas Eve candlelight worship service at 7 p.m. Sunday. It will feature Christmas carol singing and special music.

The church is located at 302 W. Augusta.

* North Hill Christian Church, 4620 N. Post, will host a Christmas Eve worship service at 6 p.m. Sunday.

* The choir of Shadle Park Presbyterian Church will perform the Christmas cantata “Festival of Light” during the 9 and 10:30 a.m. worship services on Sunday. A contemporary Christmas Eve service will begin at 4 p.m. and a traditional service is set for 8 p.m.

The church is located at 5508 N. Alberta.

* Central Baptist Church, 19 W. Shannon, will stage a living Nativity scene outside the church this week. Members of the congregation will be braving the elements from 6 to 8:30 p.m. today, Friday and Saturday.

On Christmas Eve the church will host a worship service at 9 p.m.

* Covenant Christian Church will put on two Christmas Eve worship services Sunday. A candlelight service starts at 7 p.m. and a Communion candlelight service begins at 11 p.m.

The church is located at 15515 N. Gleneden Drive.

* A family worship service will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 7307 N. Nevada. An additional candlelight service will start at 11 p.m. Christmas Day will be celebrated at a 10 a.m. service.

* A candlelight Christmas Eve worship service will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday at Mission Community Presbyterian Church, 2103 E. Mission.

* Salem Lutheran Church will host a traditional candlelight worship service at 11 p.m. Sunday.

* A dramatic presentation of the Christmas story will be performed during the 6 p.m. Christmas Eve service at Shiloh Hills Baptist Church, 207 E. Lincoln Road.

* St. Luke Lutheran Church, 9704 N. Division, will put on three Christmas Eve services on Sunday. A family service will begin at 5:30 p.m., and candlelight services will be offered at 9 and 11 p.m.

Christmas Day will be celebrated during a 10 a.m. worship service.

* A children’s Christmas Eve worship service begins at 7 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 4704 N. Wall. The Christmas Day service will start at 10 a.m.

* A family Christmas Eve service of candles and carols will begin at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Westview Congregational Church, 3405 W. Bismark.

* New Horizons Community Church will hold a special candlelight worship service during its normal 10 a.m. worship time Sunday. The children’s choir will perform Christmas music.

The congregation meets at Glover Middle School, 2404 W. Longfellow.

* The children of the Unity Church of North Spokane will present “Las Posadas,” a Christmas tradition of the Mexican people, during the 9:30 and 11 a.m. worship services Sunday.

The church will also offer a Christmas Eve candlelight service at 7 p.m. Sunday. The church meets at 6116 N. Market.

* Whitworth Presbyterian Church will offer only two morning worship services Sunday, a contemporary service in Quall Hall at 8:45 a.m. and a traditional service in the sanctuary at 11 a.m.

The first Christmas Eve service begins at 5 p.m. Sunday in Quall Hall. The interactive family service will allow children to play lambs, angels, shepherds and wise men. The 7 p.m. service in Quall Hall will feature music performed by violin, flute, brass and piano. The children and youth will sing Christmas music.

The 9 and 11 p.m. candlelight services will be held in the sanctuary. The church is located at 312 W. Hawthorne Road.

Christmas dinner is served

St. Charles Catholic Church will once again serve its annual free dinner on Christmas Day. Turkey with all the trimmings will be served from noon to 2 p.m. Monday.

Transportation is available if requested by 1 p.m. Friday by calling the church at 327-9573. St. Charles will offer Christmas Eve Masses at 6 and 10 a.m. Mass begins at 9 a.m. on Christmas Day.
