Gu Music Student Wins Composition Award

Gonzaga University music education and composition major Bernie Sauer has won the second annual Student Choral Composition Award for undergraduate composers from the Pacific Northwest.

The competition is sponsored by Opus 7, a Seattle professional vocal ensemble specalizing in 19th- and 20th-century a cappella choral music.

Sauer, a senior from Littleton, Colo., was honored for his setting of the Christmas text “Dear Little One,” scored for an a cappella choir of mixed voices.

Call for artists

Spokane’s Procession of the Species Celebration organizing committee is looking for people to lead visual arts workshops, vocal and instrumental expression workshops, and creative movement workshops for people of all ages.

The workshops will help people create artistic representations of their favorite species for an Earth Day celebration. For more information, an artist’s open house is scheduled Jan. 11 from 4 to 7 p.m. on the third floor of the Spokane Art School, 920 N. Howard.

Auditions

* Spokane Civic Theatre will hold auditions for “Macbeth” by William Shakespeare, Jan. 9-10 at 7 p.m. at the WestCoast Grand Hotel.

Needed are 25 men and seven women to appear over 20 years old, and one boy to appear age 10-12. Auditioners are asked to be prepared to read from the script. Most men must be willing and able to learn stage combat.

“Macbeth” will be presented Feb. 23-March 10. For more information call 325-1413.

* Spokane Children’s Theatre will hold auditions for “Pinocchio” on Saturday and next Sunday at St. Aloysius School, 611 E. Mission.

Actors are needed to play lead roles, as well as members of the chorus of townspeople and Land of the Toys people. Special talents, such as acrobatics, juggling and playing musical instruments, are desirable.

Auditions for ages 10-14 are Saturday at 10 a.m. No preparation is needed, dress comfortably. Auditions for ages 15 to adult are Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 6 p.m. Prepare a 1-minute song (accompanist will be provided) and dress comfortably.

* The Ham on Regal Players are seeking Ferris High School parents to participate in this year’s fund-raising production, “Nautical Nonsense.” An organizational meeting is next Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Ferris auditorium; for information, call 353-4400.

Classes

* Spokane actor Patrick Treadway is offering classes on classical auditioning, Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon and next Sunday from 1- to p.m. at Talent Resource Studio, Pines and Trent. Classes are designed to help actors with prepared monologues and reading from director’s selections.
