Five years ago: U.S. tank platoons crossed a just-completed pontoon bridge from Croatia to their peacekeeping mission in Bosnia.

One year ago: Russian President Boris Yeltsin announced his resignation. The United States prepared to hand over the Panama Canal to Panama at midnight.
