America West Can’T Add More Planes

The Federal Aviation Administration is barring America West Airlines from adding planes on grounds that the carrier doesn’t adequately care for the ones it has.

America West denied the maintenance allegation.

The FAA told America West last week by letter that it must improve maintenance before the agency would authorize additional aircraft. In October, America West announced plans to add 27 Airbus aircraft. Three were to be in service by May.

America West announced in December that it would begin offering nonstop flights from Spokane to Phoenix and Las Vegas beginning in March. There was no information available late Tuesday whether the FAA ruling would alter those plans.
