Obituaries

Eileen Williams St. Maries

Service for Eileen Williams, 92, will be today at 1 p.m. at Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries.

Mrs. Williams, who was born in Clarkston, Wash., died Friday.

She married Murel Williams in 1928, and they worked as farmers in the Pomeroy, Wash., and Lewiston, Genesee, Tensed, and Deary, Idaho, areas.

They moved to the Harrison (Idaho) Flats in 1968 and continued farming until retiring and moving to Mission Point near St. Maries in 1974.

Mrs. Williams was a homemaker and artist and had entered charcoal sketches in the Benewah County Fair.

She attended the St. Maries Assembly of God Church.

Her husband died in 1978.

Survivors include two sons, Jim and Murvin Williams, both of St. Maries; a sister, Velma Oldenburg of Pomeroy; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Ella Wilson Schmidt Hayden Lake, Idaho

Private service for Ella Wilson Schmidt, 96, was held Monday at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene.

Mrs. Schmidt, who was born in Camargo, Okla. , died Friday.

She traveled west with her family to Toppenish, Wash., in 1909. She lived in various places and attended schools in Toppenish, in Plummer, Idaho, and Cheney.

She married Otto Schmidt in 1925, and they farmed near Odessa and Harrington, Wash. She also taught school in Ruff, Wash., and various other communities.

In 1935 Mrs. Schmidt and her husband moved to the Rathdrum (Idaho) Prairie and continued farming. They later moved to Hayden Lake where she taught at Mountainview Elementary School. She retired in 1966.

Her husband died in 1977.

She was a member of the National Retired Teachers Association and the Coeur d’Alene Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

Survivors include a son, Stanley Schmidt of Portland; one grandson, Stephen; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.

Daniel Riley Spokane

Funeral Mass for Daniel H. Riley, 89, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Riley, who was born in Canton, S.D., died Thursday.

He grew up on a farm in Murdo, S.D., and worked for the Postal Service in Rapid City, S.D. He also had worked in shipyards near Seattle.

Mr. Riley moved to Spokane in 1946 and married Helen Cruse.

He worked as a steelworker for Kaiser Aluminum for 30 years.

Mr. Riley, a Golden Eagle, was a member of Eagles Aerie 2 and was a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

His wife preceded him in death.

Survivors include a grandson, Daniel Bennett of Spokane.

Julia Schmidt Rosalia, Wash.

Graveside service for Julia M. Schmidt, 84, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Evergreen Cemetery in Rosalia. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Rosalia is in charge of arrangements.

A lifetime Thornton and Rosalia area resident, Mrs. Schmidt died Friday. She was born in Thornton, Wash.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Plaza (Wash.) Grange and Sewing Club.

Her husband, Earl, died in 1977.

Mrs. Schmidt is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Fred Westerberg Coeur d’Alene

Visitation for Fred N. Westerberg, 80, will be held Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. with a rosary service at 7 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Funeral Mass will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas Roman Catholic Church in Coeur d’Alene with burial to follow at St. Thomas Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene.

Mr. Westerberg, who was born in Montana, died Thursday.

He was a farmer in Montana before serving with the Army during World War II in the South Pacific. He later worked in the carpentry business in Minnesota for a short time.

He moved to Coeur d’Alene and worked at a lumber yard prior to becoming a state Highway Department employee. He also worked at Northwest Timber in Coeur d’Alene.

Mr. Westerberg married Nadine Pyle in 1952 and worked for Potlatch until retiring in 1985 after 25 years of service.

He was a member of the Coeur d’Alene Eagles Aerie and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member and usher at St. Thomas Catholic Church. Mr. Westerberg’s wife died in 1997.

Survivors include a son, Richard Westerberg of Hayden, Idaho; two daughters, Marsha Williams of Boise and Sharon Westerberg of Coeur d’Alene; two brothers, James Westerberg of Coeur d’Alene and Walter Westerberg of Fargo, N.D.; three sisters, Lorraine Sannes of Moorhead, Minn., Betty Bren of Sprague, Wash., and Frances Swaggart of Cooks, Mich.; and five grandchildren.

Elizabeth Kelly Post Falls

Private service for Elizabeth J. “Betty” Kelly, 68, will be held at a later date. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Kelly, who was born in Anaheim, Calif., died Friday.

She grew up in California and in 1957 married Patrick Kelly.

Mrs. Kelly and her husband lived in Orange County, Calif., for many years before moving to Nevada in 1970.

The couple settled in Post Falls in 1995, and she was a homemaker and seamstress.

Mrs. Kelly is survived by her husband; four daughters, Annette McHone and April Finley, both of Nevada, Kathleen McFFord of California and Vicki MacGreggor of Florida; and nine grandchildren.

Floyd Larson Butte, Mont.

Memorial service for Floyd George Larson, 74, was held Monday at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Pullman. Duggan Dolan Mortuary in Butte was in charge of arrangements.

Born in Westby, Mont, Mr. Larson died Friday.

During World War II he served in the Army as an X-ray technician in Europe.

He later received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Montana.

Mr. Larson worked as a reporter for the Pioneer in Ronan Mont., during the 1950s. He was editor of the Daily Interlake in Kalispell, Mont., from 1962 to 1972, the wire editor for the Evening Herald in Manchester, Conn., from 1972 to 1977 and the editor of the Pullman Herald from 1978 to 1988.

He served on the Pullman City Council from 1989 until recently, when he moved to Butte.

Mr. Larson was a member of the Lions Club and the Pullman Senior Center.

His wife, Barbara, died in 1993.

Survivors include a son, Erick Larson of Seattle; two stepsons, Bruce Kidder of Carnation, Wash., and Tom Kidder of West Newbury, Vt.; a stepdaughter, Susan DeBree of Butte; and eight grandchildren.

Margery Livingston Spokane

Private service will be held for Margery Lee Livingston, 99. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Livingston, who was born in Norwich, England, died Friday.

She received a degree in nursing in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Mrs. Livingston moved to Spokane in 1923 and worked as the surgical supervisor at St. Luke’s Hospital.

She was administrator for the Shriners Hospital for Children from 1926 to 1934. She transferred to Chicago to be administrator of the Chicago Shiners Hospital.

In 1937 she married Louis Livingston and returned to Spokane.

During World War II, she taught the Cadet Nurses Corps at Deaconess School of Nursing.

Mrs. Livingston served as a volunteer for many health organizations, including the American Cancer Society, Community Welfare Council, United Crusade and the American Red Cross.

She was a member of the Landscape Association of the Cathedral of St. John, Spokane Garden Club, Eastern Washington Historical Society and the Archeological Society.

Mrs. Livingston is survived by her husband.

Herman Schillinger Spokane

Visitation for Herman Fred Schillinger, 77, will be from noon to 8 p.m. today and Wednesday at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Pines Cemetery.

Mr. Schillinger, 77, died Saturday.

He was born in Batum, Wash., and grew up in Odessa, Wash. His family later moved to the Mount Spokane area where he graduated from Mead High School in 1940.

Mr. Schillinger served in the military with Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s headquarters in the Philippines and Japan.

He worked for Cummins Diesel in Spokane for seven years.

In 1952 Mr. Schillinger and his partner, Ray Bisterfeldt, opened Spokane Diesel Pump Repair, which led to the opening of Spokane Diesel Inc. They sold the business and retired in 1979.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Dolores; a son, George Schillinger of Denver; a daughter, Julie Schillinger-Vinales of Chandler, Ariz.; two brothers, Walter and Ernest Schillinger, both of Spokane; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Roy Bucknell Spokane

Memorial Mass for Roy T. Bucknell will be at 9 a.m. today at St. Paschal’s Roman Catholic Church. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Bucknell died Jan. 16 in Tucson, Ariz. He was 70.

He served in the Marine Corps from 1946 to 1949.

Mr. Bucknell married Josie Say in 1949. They divorced in 1994.

He worked for Montomery Ward and Sears before working for Arden Farms Dairy.

Mr. Bucknell and his wife owned and operated Porta-Pool Co. from 1962 to 1994.

He was involved in the Boys Scouts of America as a cubmaster and pack committeeman in 1961 and from 1962 to 1964 held the positions of Cub, Webelo and Scout leader. He was scoutmaster of Troops 430 and 472. He received the St. George Medal and a Catholic Scouting Award in 1965 and the Scouters Key in 1967 and 1971. He was a member of the Order of the Arrow.

Mr. Bucknell was the past chairman of the Catholic Committee on Scouting and assistant Valley district commissioner, and in 1981 he was committee chairman.

He spent winter in Arizona.

Survivors include four sons, Mark, Robert, Donald and Bruce Bucknell; a daughter, Joan Nickle; two brothers, Ronald and Jack Bucknell; a half-sister, Rosetta Battin; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Holger Landstrom Yakima

Memorial service for Holger Landstrom, 80, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Shaw and Sons Funeral Directors in Yakima. A second memorial service will be held in Spokane at a later date.

A 34-year former Spokane resident, Mr. Landstrom died Saturday. Born in Vannas, Sweden, he served in the Swedish military for two years.

Mr. Landstrom worked as a millwright for Spokane Wood Workings.

He moved to Yakima 16 years ago.

Survivors include his wife of 13 years, Hattie; a daughter, Connie Fredrick of Oregon City; a stepson, Jerome McIlvanie of Yakima; a stepdaughter, Nancy Door of Yakima; two sisters, Signhild Bergstrom of Umea, Sweden, and Anita Goransson of Vannas; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Daren `Frenchie’ LaBolle Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Daren H. “Frenchie” LaBolle, 77, will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene.

Mr. LaBolle, who was born in Deary, Idaho, died Saturday.

Born in Dear, Idaho, he grew up in Spokane.

Mr. LaBolle joined the Army in 1944 and was stationed in Germany during World War II. He was involved in the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. LaBolle received the Purple Heart Award.

He returned to Spokane in 1946, and married Pearl “Bette” Strouse in 1956. They settled in the Coeur d’Alene area and owned The Blue Moon, which is now the Cotton Club in Hayden Lake, Idaho.

He later worked as an electrician at Kaiser Aluminum in Spokane until his retirement in 1982.

Mr. LaBolle was a member of the Coeur d’Alene Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post Falls American Legion and United Steelworkers Union in Spokane.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Patrick LaBolle of Coeur d’Alene and Michael LaBolle of Ogden, Utah; a brother, Larry LaBolle of Alaska; two grandchilren, Daren and Jon, and four great-grandchildren.

Florence Carlson Spokane

Memorial service for Florence Eddy Carlson will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Central Baptist Church. Inurnment will be at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Carlson, 85, died Friday.

She was born in Youngstown, Alberta, and her family moved to Spokane when she was an infant.

Mrs. Carlson was a homemaker and a member of Central Baptist Church.

Her husband, Alvin Eddy, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Dennis Eddy of Palm Springs, Calif.; two daughters, Barbara Smith of Spokane and Helen Jakubas of Jackson, Mich.; six grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.
