Local Job Corps students learn both in classrooms and on the job, but officials say that’s only a small part of their training. Students in the Hotel and Apartment Maintenance program recently spent the day shoveling snow for the elderly.

The City Council recently approved a real estate purchase near the Saddle Club that may be developed by a large, unidentified, retail developer. The Saddle Club will likely be relocated to land near the Port of Ephrata.

Inland Tarp and Cover’s local manufacturing plant, which employed up to 20 people, moved to Moses Lake. Local farmer Glen Knopp started ITC in 1978 as a part-time business. By 1989, it was a full-time job with workers in Almira and Moses Lake.
Pend Oreille County

Charlie Schaefer has been removing snow downtown with a sidewalk-sized snow plow. Schaefer rescued the plow from the local dump, and rebuilt the engine. He plows as a favor to friends, and a service to his neighbors.

Central Washington University officials named three area residents to the 1999 fall quarter honor roll. Charles P. Herman and Casey E. Schneider of Chattaroy and Kelliejo D. Diehl of Deer Park earned the honor by maintaining at least a 3.5 grade-point average.

The local school district is running a $690,000 maintenance and operations levy for the 2000 and 2001 school years, the same as asked for in 1998 and 1999. In the 1998 election, the levy received 70 percent voter approval.

“DNA Repair: Protecting Cells from Chaos and Cancer” is the topic of Washington State University molecular biosciences professor Michael Smerdon’s Feb. 17 Distinguished Faculty Address. The 7:30 p.m. public talk will be in Daggy Hall’s R.R. Jones Theatre. Smerdon is internationally known for his contributions to the understanding of DNA damage and repair.

The Cherry Creek Trailer Park failed to perform required tests for coliform bacteria in the third quarter of 1999. It also failed to notify the public of its failure to test, according to the Panhandle Health District. Tests performed in the fourth quarter revealed no problems with the water.

Schweitzer Mountain Resort will release the price of next year’s season passes in March, according to Ingrid Campbell, marketing director. New owners of the resort - Harbor Properties and Resorts - sold this season passes for $199 last spring. Boundary County Bonners Ferry Pastor Craig Wikoff was elected president of the Ministerial Association of Bonners Ferry. Wikoff is pastor of the Church of Nazarene.

The Women’s Center received a $5,000 award from “Doors of Hope” - a national initiative of Philip Morris Companies in partnership with the National Network to End Domestic Violence Fund. The center is a nonprofit organization that provides 24-hour advocacy, shelter, crisis intervention, counseling and more for victims of domestic violence, rape and sexual assault.

Vintage valentines and lace-making are part of a special exhibit at the McConnell Mansion Museum from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday. The Appaloosa Lace Guild will demonstrate making various types of lace. The museum will also display handmade doll clothing.

Derek Williams of Kellogg was chosen to be on the 2000 Junior All-American Trapshooting team. To be considered for the All-American team, Williams had to meet a minimum target requirement and he had to have competed in at least three states.

The Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks will accept public comment on boating-use issues on Montana waters during an open house. The meeting is set for 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Libby City Hall.
