Bad Weather Causes Delay In Contract Negotiations

Icy roads caused two snow days in the Riverside School District last week and postponed a chance for teachers and administrators to finally agree on a contract.

Members of the Riverside Education Association were set to meet with administrators Feb. 2 to try out a new bargaining process. Last month, the bargaining teams took part in a two-day training session on interest-based bargaining. That style of bargaining allows for party-to-party dialog and focuses on discussing problems and working together to come up with creative solutions.

Since the end of the last school year, the groups have been using a more adversarial process - working through a mediator - and have yet to reach an agreement regarding the teachers’ contract.

A new date for the bargaining session has not yet been set.
