Lori Marick wants to survey parents of Othello students to find out why parents are not involved and how they could strengthen ties with teachers. Marick says she feels parents are intimidated by teachers and administration, and find the PTA too boring.

Local people can get free assistance with income taxes on March 25 and 27. The Internal Revenue Service is again sending its Tax Mobile through rural communities. IRS workers will help prepare basic individual tax returns, have all forms available, resolve problems and answer questions.
Grant County
Moses Lake
Wayne Rimple may be able to keep his City Council seat. Rimple is feeling pressure to resign due to a law which prohibits governments from doing business with their elected officials. Rimple owns the only steel company within 100 miles and has a contract with the city of Moses Lake. Rep. Joyce Mullikan is introducing legislation to let municipal officers in cities of 30,000 people or fewer have contracts with local government.

Karl Moldrem of Lincoln County Juvenile Court has been interviewing youngsters in the court system about what influenced them. The top response? Juvenile offenders said parents didn’t pay attention to them. Many added they were disappointed that their parents weren’t more assertive with discipline. They also said older siblings’ behavior, lack of jobs and availability of drugs and alcohol were major factors.

Pend Oreille County, which usually has the state’s highest unemployment rate, dropped out of double-digit joblessness in December 1999. Numbers show 8.6 percent of workers looking for work, as compared to 12.2 percent in December 1998.

Spokane
The Spokane Parks and Recreation Department is negotiating with David Evans and Associates of Spokane for a consulting contract to design voter-approved work at four parks. A bond issue approved last year would pay for upgrading Riverfront, Manito, Grant and Comstock parks.
Stevens County
Kettle Falls
Reserve officers Gary Franz and Bill Buscher were stopped at the Kettle Falls Exxon station when a woman told them her husband was having a heart attack. The officers, both EMTs, worked on the man while commandeering an out-ofservice ambulance parked at the Kettle Falls Police Department. The man was connected to the heart monitor and taken to Mount Carmel Hospital in Colville. The entire episode took 14 minutes.

St. Maries
A video series featuring Dr. Gary Smalley aimed at helping people better understand others will be presented at 7 p.m. each Wednesday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, College Avenue and 10th St. There is no charge to attend the series which continues through March 8.

The Priest River Museum and Timber Education Center will feature antique advertising such as movie posters, newspaper ads, business cards, pens, key chains and magazine ads March through June. A page position for U.S. Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, is available for the spring session. Juniors in high school who will be 16 years old on or before the day of appointment may apply. Snake River salmon and the four Lower Snake River dams will be discussed and written comment will be taken during a public hearing held by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the National Marine Fisheries Service. A free bus ride to the hearing, from noon to 5 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to midnight Thursday, will leave from Rosauers parking lot at 4 p.m. and return at 10:45 p.m.

Sponsors are needed for the Silver Hoops 3-on-3 Tournament set for July 29-30. Part of the proceeds benefit the Costa Memorial Fund for disadvantaged youths in the Silver Valley. Roxanne Journot-Escudero, a 1978 graduate of Libby High School, will participate in a bicycle ride from Orlando to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., March 31 to April 2. The ride will benefit AIDS research.
