Perhaps that grew from the fact that government was in our ancestors’ bedrooms in a big way. Turn-of-the century jail logs found recently at the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office reveal an emphasis on morals charges. From ferreting out “seduction” to “lazy husbands,” deputies were busy keeping people on the straight and narrow.
In 1902 a man was jailed for unlawful cohabitation. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail, plus fines and costs.
Levon Caron was jailed for importing girls for immoral purposes. Sentence: $2,000 bond. Released on bond. Remarks: Light hair, blue eyes, Frenchman.
Chancy Havirland was jailed for carnal knowledge of an idiot. He paid a $500 bond and was taken to Walla Walla.
C.A. Montgomery was jailed for rape on Jan. 1. He was released on Jan. 3. Remarks: Married the girl.
A lazy husband was ordered to support his wife and baby and maintain residence together with them.
