Hewlett-Packard Co. said first-quarter earnings were lower than a year earlier but managed to beat analyst estimates. The Pal Alto, Calif.-based company posted income excluding one-time items of $794 million, or 80 cents a share, against $882 million, or 95 cents a year earlier. Analysts surveyed by First Call Corp. had forecast 78 cents a share.

Entertainment group Viacom Inc. said earnings surged 48 percent in the fourth quarter.
