Area Residents Receive Military Recognition

Air Force airmen Julie Warner and John Tally have graduated from basic military training at Lackand Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Warner, a 1999 graduate of Deer Park High School, is the daughter of Judy George, Deer Park.

Tally is the son of Cathy and John Tally, Fairchild Air Force Base, and a 1999 graduate of Medical Lake High School.

Marica Jones graduated from the Great Lakes Naval Training Center and is stationed aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln Aircraft Carrier in Everett.

Jones, who graduated from Alternative High School, is the daughter of Beverly and Randall Jones, Spokane.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Justin Caldeira has graduated from the aerospace ground equipment apprentice and mission-ready technician course at Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, Texas. Caldeira, who is the son of Deena Munguia, Spokane, is a 1995 graduate of Ferris High School.

Army Staff Sgt. Gary Beemster has been decorated with the Army Commendation Medal, given to those who demonstrate outstanding achievement or meritorious service.

Beemster is a squad leader assigned to Headquarters Co., Camp Casey, Tongduchon-Up, South Korea. The 1991 graduate of University High School is the son of Jacquiline Kennedy and Gary Johnson-Beemster, both Spokane.

Navy Ensign Karl Sander, a 1994 graduate of Gonzaga Prep, was designated a naval flight officer while serving with Training Squadron 86, Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Fla.

Presentation of the coveted Wings of Gold marked the culmination of 18 months of flight training.

Sander, who joined the Navy in May 1998, also graduated that year from Marquette University, Milwaukee.

Air Force Airman Brandon Taylor graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Taylor is a 1999 graduate of Shadle Park High School and the son of Peggy Lynch and Richard Taylor, both of Spokane.

Air Force Airman Benjamin Fifer graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Fifer, the son of Dawn and Gary Fifer, is a 1999 graduate of Central Valley High School.

Marine Pvt. 1st Class Teresa Mobbott has graduated from basic military training and combat duty, and is now stationed at Camp Pendleton, Calif. She is the daughter of David and Chris Mobbott, Spokane.

Navy Airman Marvin Mascardo participated in a 29-ship flotilla as part of the annual Fleet Week activities in San Francisco. Mascardo is the son of Nida and Edward Mascardo, Spokane.

Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Steven Churchwell has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

The son of Bonnie and James Churchwell, Spokane, he is a 1985 graduate of Shadle Park High School and a 1992 graduate of Eastern Washington University.

Air National Guard Senior Airman Roger Perdue has graduated from the supply management inventory apprentice course at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Perdue is the son of Mary and Ray Perdue, Medical Lake, and a 1996 graduate of Medical Lake High School.

Brandon Yowell, an Army Reserve private, has graduated from the light-wheel vehicle mechanic advanced individual training course at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

Yowell is the son of Sue and Reggie Patenaude, Newport, Wash.

Army Pvt. Derek DeHaas has been named Soldier of the Cycle, based on his exemplary duty performance and other accomplishments.

He is the son of Robyn and Herbert DeHaas, Veradale, and a 1999 graduate of Central Valley High School.

Cadet William Taylor, son of Jeanine and Ange Taylor, Spokane, was selected Brigade Sandhurst Officer at the U.S. Military Academy.

The Sandhurst Competition is in conjunction with the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst of England. During competition, each company provides one nine-member squad to perform a series of military tasks.

Taylor expects to graduate with a degree in international history in May, when he will be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army.
