Former Gsl Stars Shine For Sasquatch

Two former Greater Spokane League basketball stars, who are winding up their careers at the Community Colleges of Spokane, have been chosen the Sasquatch athletes of the month for January.

Sophomores Amy George from Ferris and Chris Allen from North Central received the honors.

George has consistently been one of the Sasquatch’s leading scorers and rebounders, and is considered the team’s best post defender. She is averaging 10.8 points and was named to alltournament first teams at the Grossmont Holiday Classic in San Diego and the Bigfoot Crossover at CCS.

Allen, a 6-foot point guard, averaged 14.5 points, hitting 48 percent from the field, and 5.8 assists per game as CCS climbed into first place in NWAACC Region III.

“Chris is an exceptional athlete who possesses excellent basketball skills,” said coach Sam Brasch.

Baseball

The Inland Empire Baseball Umpires Association will have its WIAA state rules clinic Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the theater at Gonzaga Prep.

Terry Baughman is the state rules clinician with Dave Tikker the Just Play Fair clinician.

There will be an American Legion baseball auction a week from today at the Quality Inn Valley Suites, 8923 E. Mission. Doors will open at 4 p.m. with bidding at 5.

Advance admission is $10.

Autographed sports memorabilia, appliances, hotel rooms, a fourwheel-drive ATV and gift certificates are among the items to be auctioned.

Bowling

With a record effort, Pork Fried Woodnuts won the Spokane Bowling Association scratch five-man team championship as the 1999-2000 tournament wound up last weekend.

Led by Doug Smith, who rolled a tournament-high 805 three-game series, the Woodnuts had a scratch game of 1,267 and a series of 3,562, both association records. Smith rolled a 259-805, Jim Hanson a 276-703, Jim Allen a 193-685, Jeremy Allen a 259-654 and Sean Heath a 280-715.

The five-man team handicap champions are Preferred Painting with a 3,635. Members are- Mike Turney (611), William Devine (728), Robert Kleinknecht (625), Leo Harman (692) and Larry Harman (655). They had a handicap of 324.

Jeremy Allen (677) and Heath (790) joined Michael Smith (601) to win the three-man scratch title with a 2,068. Handicap winners were Mark McBeth (740), Robert Higgins (631) and Corey Knudsvig (584) with a 256 handicap for a 2,211.

Jerry Swanson was a double winner in the handicap division. He captured singles with an 851 and rolled a 513 in joining Ryan Winkey (702) for a 1,571 in doubles. Scratch singles winner was Blane Silvey with a 750 while Kenneth Fletcher (727) and Larry Parrish (705) won scratch doubles with a 1,432.

All-events winners were Bart King, with a 2,101 scratch, and Tracy Thomas with a 2,286 handicap.

In the seniors event, Alvin Schroeder won scratch with a 727 and Glen Strand handicap with a 789.

The event drew 408 singles entries and 55 five-man teams. Hanson and Ron McDonald shared high game with 299s. McDonald also had a 290, as did Jim Glendenning.

Spokane will be the site of the 18th annual Washington State Championship Tournament for Youth Bowlers during six weekends over a seven-week period beginning March 25-26.

More than 700 teams are expected. Opening ceremonies will be March 25 at 10:30 a.m. at Colonial Bowl. Volunteer of the year will be honored at that time.

The event will continue April 1-2, 8-9, 15-16, 29-30 and May 13-14.

College scene

Craig Henneberry of Spokane (Ferris), the lone senior on the University of Puget Sound men’s basketball team, was the school’s athlete of the week last week.

The 6-foot-5 forward scored 40 points in two games, including 21 in a win over Whitman, and pulled down 12 rebounds in the two games. He also had four assists against Whitman.

Figure skating

Spokane had two top-10 finishers at the 2000 State Farm U.S. Figure Skating Championships last week in Cleveland.

Kim Ryan, 15, a Gonzaga Prep sophomore who skates for the Lilac City Figuring Skating Club, placed seventh overall in junior women. She was sixth in the technical program and seventh in the freestyle, landing three of four planned triple jumps as well as two double-doubles. The finish earned Ryan an invitation into an elite Olympic/figure skating athlete program to help her define her strengths and weaknesses.

Johnnie Bevan, 23, who skates for the Spokane Figure Skating Club, was 10th overall in the senior men’s division after placing 12th in the short program and 11th in the long, landing five of six planned triple jumps.

Hockey

Three dozen teams, with players ages 9-17, will be in Spokane this coming weekend for the Pacific Northwest Amateur Hockey Association (PNAHA) Washington State Tier II championships.

The Spokane American Youth Hockey Association is host club. Games will be Friday-Monday at Eagles Ice-A-Rena and Ice World USA, with championship games Monday, Feb. 28.

Divisions are squirt (ages 9-10), peewee (11-12), bantam (13-14) and midget (15-17). Spokane will have a team in each division.

There is no charge for spectators.

Martial arts

The Spokane Institute of Tae-Kwon-Do will present a benefit martial arts exhibition March 10 at Shaw Middle School, 4106 N. Cook, from 6:30-9 p.m.

Admission will be $7.50 for adults, $5 for students, or $5 and $3.50 with two cans of food. Proceeds benefit the Northeast Youth Center children’s program and food pantry.

Featured will be Tae-Kwon-Do master Starley Mason, senseis Ron Dryden and Ron Bledsoe and Roy Harrington, Roger Mosconi and Teruo Chinen.

Sports shows

LPGA Tour player Kris Monaghan, who was born in Spokane, will be the guest instructor at the Spokane Golf Show in the Spokane Convention Center this coming weekend.

Monaghan, who grew up in New Mexico but has returned to Spokane, has more than 18 years of professional golf experience. She will provide free instructional tips throughout weekend.

The Spokane Golf Show will be held in conjunction with SportsFest, which has more than 40 exhibitors lined up, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Golf show hours are Friday noon-9 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m-5 p.m. SportsFest will open at 5 p.m. Friday, with the rest of the hours the same.

Adult admission is $6, 12 and under is free. Patrons can move between the shows without additional charge. Tickets are available at G&B outlets and at the door.

In addition to giant hitting nets for consumers to try out, the Original Putting Green, a 30-ton monster that can be contoured and plays like a real green, will be on display.

Track and field

There have been some schedule changes for the inaugural Pole Vault Extravaganza.

The open competition will be held in the Spokane Community College gym Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The event had been scheduled for the University High gym. U-Hi will be the site of a free coaches clinic Friday from 4-7 p.m.

March 3 (4-7 p.m.) and 4 (9 a.m.-5 p.m.) at the U-Hi track there will be a hands-on clinic for junior high and high school athletes. Cost is $15.

Miscellany

A public reception to honor departing Washington State University athletic director Rick Dickson will be Monday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Lewis Alumni Center on the Pullman campus.

Dickson, selected as the new athletic director at Tulane University, will wind up a six-year stay at WSU the first week in March.
