Basketball tiebreakers

Vanessa Shelton scored 15 of her season-high 22 points in the second half, including a go-ahead basket during the final minute, and University defeated Gonzaga Prep 47-45 at North Central Saturday to clinch a berth to the Eastern 4A Regional Tournament.

The Greater Spokane League tiebreaker gave U-Hi the No. 2 seed to the District 8 4A tournament, with an opening-round bye and automatic regional berth. G-Prep, the No. 3 seed, will open district at 7 p.m.

Tuesday at home in a loser-out against No. 6 Shadle Park (11-9).

Mead (16-4) is the GSL No. 1. The No. 5, Ferris (14-6), will open district at No. 4 Central Valley (15-6) in another 7 p.m. Tuesday loser-out.

G-Prep missed three shots at the basket in the final 10 seconds.

Leanne Snavely, Cherie’ Dreger and Lacy Thayer combined for 44 points to send the Wildcats past the Crusaders in a winner-to-district, loser-out game at Mead High.

NWC’s DeMecia Casimir scored her 14 points in the second half.

The Wildcats, as the Bi-County League No. 4, will open the NEB District at 6:45 p.m. Monday at Spokane Falls Community College against Panorama League No. 1 St. George’s (23-0). Top-ranked St. George’s and W-C played for last year’s State B title, the last time the Dragons lost.
