Albert Martinez Jr. A Candidate For Scholars Program

Albert Martinez Jr., a senior at Saint George’s School, has been named a candidate in the Presidential Scholars Program.

Now in its 37th year, the program is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating seniors. The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars, a group appointed by the President, will make the final selection of one boy and one girl from each state.

Martinez is the son of Karen and Albert Martinez, Coeur d’Alene.

Idaho Sen. Larry Craig has nominated area high school students for appointments to United States military academies for the year 2000:

Lucian Kins, Sandpoint High School, U.S. Naval Academy; Darcy Jones, Coeur d’Alene High School, Jay Zmuda, Priest River (Idaho) High School, U.S. Military Academy; and Amy Hallock and Sarah Thilo, both of Lake City High School, U.S. Air Force Academy.

John Cotter, a junior at Gonzaga Prep, has been selected for the NBC Camps Boys Senior Tour to Australia. More than 700 young athletes tried out last summer. The selection process is based on athletic ability, personal character and moral excellence.

Last year he was chosen for the tour to England.

Cotter is the son of Nancy and Jack Cotter, Otis Orchards.

U.S. Rep. Helen Chenoweth, Idaho has nominated area high school students from the 1st Congressional District for appointments to United States military academies for classes entering in the summer. The students are listed by county:

Bonner County: Lucian Kins, U.S. Naval Academy; Adam Tate, Merchant Marine; Benjamin Zmuda, U.S. Naval and Military academies.

Kootenai county: Brent Ivanovitch, Merchant Marine; Sarah Thilo, U.S. Air Force Academy.

Latah county: Zakary Payne, U.S. Air Force Academy.
