Vandals Turn Aside Aggies

Women’s basketball

Alli Nieman and Susan Woolf combined to make 21 of 24 free throws and the Idaho Vandals held off the New Mexico State Aggies 72-62 in Big West Conference women’s basketball action Sunday at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow.

Nieman’s shooting touch from the floor was off, connecting on only 3 of 14 shots, but she nailed 12 of her 14 free-throw attempts and finished with a game-high 18 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Woolf missed all six of her 3-point attempts and finished 4 of 12 from the field, but a 9-for-10 effort at the free-throw line added up to 17 points.

Kelly Bartleson grabbed nine rebounds for Idaho (13-11, 6-5) which had a 47-36 advantage on the boards.

Melanie Maynes finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds to pace New Mexico State (9-14, 4-7).

Idaho shot just 39 percent from the floor, including 0 of 10 from 3-point range. NMSU hit just 33 percent from the field.

Oregon 70, Washington 69

Angelina Wolvert’s short banker with 11.3 seconds remaining capped a 9-0 Oregon scoring run in the final 3 minutes, lifting the Ducks over the Huskies in a Pacific-10 Conference game at Seattle.

Oregon’s defense did not allow the Huskies to get off a good shot during their final possession. Julia Gray heaved a desperation 35-footer that missed badly as time expired.

Shaquala Williams scored 20 points and Wolvert added 13 for Oregon (19-6, 10-3).

Loree Payne scored 24 points and Emily Autrey had 11 for Washington (7-18, 3-10).

There were four lead changes and four ties in the second half before Washington used a late run to take an eight-point lead.

LeAnn Sheets’ putback banker with 3:52 remaining in the game capped the Husky run and put Washington up 69-61. But those were the final points scored by Washington.
