Northeast District B girls
St. George’s and Valley Christian took the first step toward an anticipated championship-game collision when the Northeast District B girls basketball tournament opened Monday night at two sites in Spokane.
Unbeaten St. George’s (24-0) dispatched Wilbur-Creston 80-36 and twice-beaten Valley Christian (19-2) whipped Springdale 70-36 as the top seeds from the Panorama and Bi-County, respectively, led a first-night split by the leagues.
Action resumes Wednesday with St. George’s facing Sprague-Harrington at 5 p.m. and Valley Christian drawing Selkirk at 6:45 in winner-to-state matchups at Spokane Falls Community College.
In loser-out games at the same times at Spokane Community College, Republic meets Wilbur-Creston and Davenport plays Springdale.

Alyssa Henley hit 9 of 12 shots from the field and all five of her free throws in a 23-point game that led the Dragons.
St. George’s last loss was to W-C in last year’s State B championship game.

Carli Smith and Kasie Cupp were too much for the Chargers as the Panthers broke on top early and cruised.
Smith hit 9 of 13 shots in a 21-point game and grabbed 15 rebounds, while Cupp was 8 of 19 from the field in an 18-point game and grabbed eight rebounds as the duo outscored the Chargers by themselves. Springdale shot just 21 percent to VC’s 45 percent.
