Adams County Lind
The children of Lind will soon have a new slide. The local Fun Fair committee, which plans springtime activities and raises money for the school playground, was thrilled with a $1,000 donation from CenturyTel. The company’s donation, along with money already in the coffers, will be enough to replace the old slide with a new, safer slide.
Ferry County Republic
At Republic High School, it’s not only the athletes who get honors. Senior Corey Sattler, along with 13 underclassmen, was given an award for perfect attendance this year.
Grant County Ephrata
Problems with turbine blades have forced the Grant County Public Utilities District to search for better, more fish-friendly blades for Wanapum and Priest Rapids dams. Brazilian company Voith Hydro was supposed to replace a set of turbine blades, but due to late delivery, the company owes the PUD a favor. The utilities district hopes Voith Hydro will make and test a special prototype blade for the dams as repayment.
Lincoln County Odessa
Locals hope the city can obtain grant money to restore the Old City Hall. The art deco building faced condemnation in the 1970s, but citizens rallied with $35,000 to make the first floor and its ballroom usable. Today, another $30,000 is needed to bring the second floor, with a dining room, offices and lodge room, up to code.
Pend Oreille County Tiger
The historic Tiger Store, badly in need of a face lift, is being restored to its original pioneer glory. The foundation and support have been replaced. The original plank walls, ceilings, staircase and porch have also been restored. The Tiger Store will be the key to a historical and scenic loop the area plans to promote to increase tourism.
Spokane County
The Mount Spokane Ski Patrol is hosting a skiing fund-raiser for Jamie Weir on March 2 from 4 to 9:30 p.m. Wier, a 19-year-old native of Spokane and member of the ski patrol, is fighting cancer. She has tremendous medical expenses after surgery and chemotherapy, according to the ski club. The club says it needs to sell 500 tickets. Tickets are $10 and are available from any Zip Trip Store. Stevens County Colville
The 4-H Sensational Saturday is two days away. The event is hosted by the WSU Cooperative Extension, and will include workshops on cake decorating, public speaking, sportfishing and much more. Thirty workshops will fill the Colville Community College Center from 8:15 a.m. until late afternoon. Lunch is free, as is information on 4-H and 4-H related programs. Benewah County St. Maries
Matt Blood of St. Maries was hired as manager of the St. Maries Co-op Supply. Blood, 28, graduated from St. Maries High School in 1990, was a logger and then started his own business selling specialty wood products nationwide.
Bonner County Sandpoint
The Sandpoint Independent Highway District reduced the speed limit to 25 mph for any vehicle traveling posted roads. Weight restrictions of 300 pounds per inch of tire width were also posted on truck routes. The truck routes are: Division Street from U.S. Highway 2 to Baldy Mountain Road; Boyer Avenue from U.S. Highway 2 to Schweitzer Cut-off Road; Pine Street from the Highway District’s western boundary to U.S. Highway 95; Larch Street from Boyer Avenue to U.S. Highway 95; Baldy Mountain Road from the Highway District’s western boundary to Boyer Avenue; and Schweitzer Cutoff Road from the Highway District’s western boundary to U.S. Highway 95.
Boundary County Bonners Ferry
The American Cancer Society’s Boundary program will offer daffodils for sale March 13-17. The fund-raiser benefits research, education and service for residents. Bouquets of 10 blooms are $5, and orders of five or more bouquets will be delivered upon request. The deadline to order is March 1; call (208) 267-5483.
Kootenai County Post Falls
Register now for the Post Falls Parks and Recreation Department’s spring volleyball season. Two leagues are available - a league for recreational players, which begins March 20, and a league for competitive players, which starts March 22. Practice and games will be held at the Seltice Elementary School. Registration cost is $16 for Post Falls residents, $19 for others, and $55 a team. Deadline is March 8; call 773-0539.
Latah County Moscow
The Clearwater Resource Conservation and Development Council is holding a two-day conference for private forest landowners March 20-21 at the University Inn Best Western. The conference has four main sessions: “What can regulations do for us and to us?”; Practicing what they preach on their own land”; Envisioning your land in the new millennium”; and Forest health: Managing the millennium bugs and other pests.” Registration is $40, or $70 for couples; call (208) 882-4960.
Shoshone County Pinehurst
The Young Explorers are planning a trip to Lake Powell, Utah, to further their training in citizenship, volunteering and education. While in Powell, the 25-member group will study naval history, seamanship and safety. The Explorers volunteer in Pinehurst City. An all-day fund-raiser to benefit the Powell trip will be held Friday at the Kellogg Middle School and includes a rummage sale, a chili feed, an auction and a raffle.

Lincoln County Libby
Larry Richards of Libby caught the biggest fish during the recent annual McGregor Lake fishing derby. Richards was awarded $1,610 for catching the 10-pound, 14-ounce Mackinaw ahead of 460 rivals.
