North Texas 67, Idaho 40

The Eagles (15-9, 6-5 Big West) put their emphasis on defense and the strategy paid off with a Big West Conference victory over the Vandals (13-12, 6-6) at Denton, Texas.

Everything the Eagles did poorly in the pivotal game, the Vandals did worse, and Idaho didn’t play as well on defense.

North Texas shot a chilly 34.8 percent from the field, but Idaho attempted only 44 shots and made just 13 for a dreadful 29.5 percent. UNT committed 20 turnovers, but forced Idaho to commit 31.

The victory elevated UNT to a second-place tie in the Eastern Division and dropped Idaho into fourth.

The Eagles held Idaho’s All-America candidate, Alli Nieman, to seven shots in 27 minutes, and Nieman fouled out after scoring only seven points.
